Sleeping problem, help?

Asked by xStarlightx (416points) August 3rd, 2010

I need to be awake by at least 7:00 and right now its 2:35.

I cannot fall asleep and I don’t know what I should be doing to be making myself tired. Ive tired everything I can think of, counting sheep, reading, eating, and nothing is working.

Heeelppp!

Try drinking something warm like decaf tea or milk. I don’t think eating would generally help, but I have read that warm rice before bed will help you fall asleep. Read something boring, that should help too.

Grabbing a pen and paper and just writing whatever comes to mind is a good way of allowing your brain to let go of whatever it’s holding onto…

They also say that you should avoid stimulus just before bed, (like tv or, erm, internet sorry) and that you should definately not do these things in your bed room, which should be reserved as a place of rest (well, mostly!)

The other thing you can try is lying on your back, then working through your muscles from your toes upwards, tensing or flexing them, then releasing… if you do this methodically from the toes up to your face (scrunch it up, hold, then release), it can help tell your body you’re really ready to sleep and that it doesn’t need to be keeping you awake…

If this is just a one off bad night, then these things might help :)

I hope you’re already asleep though…

Eating is a bad idea.
I’d do what @harple said: make a to do list, try whole body relaxation,
I’d add to 10 sets of 10 kegels while on your back in bed. You’ll get so bored by the time you reach 50 you’ll be asleep.
Good night.

Try the muscle relaxation techniques mentioned and maybe some valerian root capsules, it is nature’s valium. You can find it at any pharmacy or health store. zzzzzzzzzzzz

Have a glass of warm milk and try this…

Lay on your back arms at your side and relax….don’t think of anything and if you do don’t worry or fixate about it either. Now inhale slowly through your nose and exhale slowly through your nose….and remember to relax….especially your shoulder and neck muscles. Squeeze your hands ONCE real hard and tight and then relax them and continue your slow relaxed breathing…continue the breathing 17 times. Relax your jaw even wiggle your jaw side to side to fully relax your face and mouth as your breathe.

Again don’t worry about any thoughts invading your skull just focus on the sound of your breathing. Engage that sound of cool calm air coming into your lungs and the relaxed sound of your exhale. After your 17th breath, roll onto your right side, hug another pillow, get comfy and repeat the 17 breaths again focus on the sound of your breath…breathe slowly and again squeeze your hands once real tight and relax them as you breathe slow and calmly. IF you are still awake after the 17th breath, slowly roll over to your left side, get comfy and again relax..release your body into a full limp blob hugging your pillow and repeat the 17 slow…relaxed breaths and focus on the sound of your breathing. I have yet to get to 17 on my left side. Sweet dreams.

Run around the block . or to the end of the street. That always gets me tired.

watch tv, try to stay awake eventually you’ll fall asleep. Or lay down with your eyes closed and think about whatever crosses your mind, let it slip by.
