Any "can't miss" art exhibits or events in NYC this week?

Asked by occ (4179points) March 22nd, 2008

I’m in town for one week only. Wondering if any flutherites have suggestions for things I should definitely see while here. I spent most of my life in NYC so I don’t need tourist recommendations, just looking for current exhibits or shows that are truly great since I’m here for such a limited time.

When was the last time you were In NYC?MOMA is a great place to start. Also, there are often small but very interesting art shows in Soho and Chelsea.

You must see the solo exhibition at the Guggenheim of the important Chineese artist, Chi Guo-Qiong. “Cai Guo-Qiang is internationally acclaimed as an artist whose creative transgressions and cultural provocations have literally exploded the accepted parameters of art making in our time.” Big feature article in NYT magazine a few weeks ago.

At the Met see the very impressive retrospective of Jasper Johns. Use the audio guide, which is very good. You will come to understand Johns’ work in new ways. Also Corbet show is excellent.

the Whitney Biennial is a mixed bag. The Spike Lee film is very good and a few other pieces.

have fun!
