The ps3 wirelessly able to connect to your computer, and there you can watch or hear whatever you have on your pc or mac. So you don’t need to connect your external hard drive to get movies from your computer to ps3. But of course if you want you have the possibility.
TVersity, for Windows, does a good job as a media server and it also transcodes formats on the fly so if you have a video or audio file that the PS3 doesn’t handle, TVersity will convert it so it works.
It will also get streams from the Internet, but you have to pay for that version.
MediaTomb for Linux is also good and you’re supposed to be able to get streams from the Internet (for free), but I’ll be buggered if I can figure out how to set it up for that.
