I just finished listening to Moby Dick, which was fantastic. Then tried a Philip Roth, which didn’t work at all—good to read, maybe, but not to listen to. I am new to the books on tape, since I always read, but I think certain books to hear would be great. Maybe some great Russian novels? others?

If you have a local library, they often have audio books there. If you are in the U.S., Cracker Barrel rents audio books that can be returned to any other CB within a week for a refund, minus a small rental fee.
As for what to select, it completely depends upon your taste in literature. And bear in mind that some audio books are abridged, so you may not get the whole story.
One thing I’ve noticed with audio books is that so much depends on the narrator, I’ve listened to lots of audio books that I would never choose to read in book form but they have been wonderful as audio. The following list is a really eclectic mix of titles that I have enjoyed:
Successful Audio Books:
The Alchemist ~ Paul Coelho (read by Jeremy Irons)**
The Fall – Simon Mawer **
Diary of an Ordinary Woman – Margaret Forster
A Severed Head – Iris Murdoch
The Stone Diaries – Carol Shields
The Child in Time – Ian McEwan
I Capture the Castle – Dodie Smith **
The Shooting Party – Isabel Colegate
My Left Foot – Christy Brown **
Far From the Madding Crowd – Thomas Hardy **
The Buddha of Suburbia – Hanif Kureishi
Regeneration – Pat Barker **
The Ghost Road – Pat Barker
Border Crossing – Pat Barker
Mr. Golightly’s Holiday – Sally Vickers
Tulip Fever – Deborah Moggach
Rebecca – Daphne du Maurier **
The Da Vinci Code – Dan Brown
Tess of the D’Urbervilles – Thomas Hardy
Part of the Furniture – Mary Wesley **
Coromandel Sea Change – Rumer Godden **
About A Boy – Nick Hornby **
A Greengage Summer – Rumer Godden
The Turning – Tim Winton**
You might find something amongst these that is to your liking… none of them are abridged versions by the way… it might be relevant to mention that, contrary to my avatar, I am female.
Beach Music
Anna Karenina
