Where do families go, when their home has been foreclosed?

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) August 7th, 2010

Are you concerned as to what happens to a family, when their home has been foreclosed. A man, a woman and their children. I do not believe this has ever been asked on Fluther. Does the government give them any kind of assistance or do they head for the nearest homeless shelter?

Well, they might be able to rent a home or apartment, they might be able to find family or friends to take them in, they might end up in a shelter or they might end up homeless. It all depends on their circumstances. I don’t know of any government programs that provide temporary housing for people just because their homes have been foreclosed on. There may be such programs, but I don’t know of any.

It happened to my parents. There was no assistance, it was just “be out by a certain date or your trespassing and everything inside becomes property of the bank”. As soon as they found out, they started looking around and ended up finding a shitty old house for rent about twenty miles from our old one. I was 13 and it sucked at the time because I didn’t really know what was going on, I had to change schools and move from a middle class home to a run down shit house. My parents did what they could to make the best out of it for me and my sisters but it still sucked. My dad got the rent for insanely cheap and then we fixed it up slowly until it was a decent home. About four years later, my folks bought their current home which is even nicer than the old one so I suppose it all worked out well for them.
