How do you prevent your migraines?

Asked by amadeus (4points) August 9th, 2010

Existing drugs have significant side effects. I am looking for a safe, alternative treatment that can help me prevent my migraines.

The only way I’ve been successful at preventing migraines has been to avoid the things that I know trigger them. If I feel one starting to come on, I lay down in my room (in the dark) and put a cool compress on my head, it works for me most of the time. I have medication for them as well, but the medication tends to make me feel sicker than the migraine does.

I was taught biofeedback in college and I think that works well for me. I find I can sense a pending headache and fend them off if I maintain my sense of where my system is and how much stress I’m putting on my body. Catching them early is the key, I think.

My wife’s friend stopped drinking diet Coke, and her migraines went away.

The best thing to do is keep yourelf from the things that makes you get migraines. You should do something like put cool pressure on you and rest. Also do something positive like watch a movie (make sure you dim the brightness because that can make it worse for you).
