3yr old with a scraped knee has 'pimples' around the scrape after removing the bandage?

Asked by MissPoovey (903points) August 9th, 2010

After removing the bandage from the 3yr olds scraped knee there are white heads around the injury but not where the adhesive was, only where the bandage was. What is causing this and how do I treat it?

Wash the area with mild warm soapy water. Check it again in a couple hours. If it doesn’t hurt, swell or spread, it should be ok.

I had the same problem a couple weeks ago! I put hydrocortisone on it a couple times a day and it went away after maybe a week.

He’s probably allergic to something in the bandage, it may have silver in it or something to help heal the wound that he’s allergic to. Google it and look at the bandage box :) he’ll be fine. Get some allergy tests done at the doctors if you’re worried, like a RAST test or patch test.

OUCH! sounds infected. That made me hurt just reading that.

Don’t use hydrocortisone if you think it might be an infection, i.e. pustules. Only use it for allergic reactions. I’d focus on keeping it clean for now.

It could be from bandage it self especially if it was touching the wound or if it got wet will bring up raised bumps.Probably nothing to worry about but to be sure keep an eye on it and keep clean with hydrogen peroxide and try to keep it clean and dry and air at night if possible depending on healing process.Of course if it becomes inflamed or is followed by fever get to a doctor especially if young child better, safe than sorry. But children will always have scapes, bumps and bruises.Good-Luck.
