Why isn't the sound coming out of a movie i play on itunes?

Asked by nimarka1 (944points) August 11th, 2010

I thought it had something to do with a conversion i made on some videos. But now i realized that any video i try playing on itunes are on mute, or something close to that. the videos play fine, yet no sound comes out of any video. so now i now its an itunes problem. I have a Mac incase thats an issue.
can someone please help with a solution?
Thanks!

Will music play?

Is it just that one movie, or any movie you try to play?

If you could open the movies in other programs, I would recommend VLC Player as an all purpose video player as it plays pretty much every video format.

http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ is the link.

This may seem obvious but it has happened to me, have you checked that all your volumes are set to high? It’s pretty to set your mac to mute and not notice. Or to have your itunes sound muted and not notice. If it’s not your volume and it’s not itunes, try headphones. If they work, it might be your speakers.

It’s probably the video that isn’t supported by itunes. Try playing it in VLC or install more codecs from Perian

@missingbite yes it does play music! i switch on and off, so i know im not going crazy. every time you hit the volume up button it makes like a click sound. I have checked the volume on my computer, and the volume in itunes. For some reason the videos do not work. Even some videos that are from itunes update like samples vids. They don’t work. I have VLC and it does work there. The thing is i want them on itunes so I can transfer to my ipad.
thanks

Try a clean re-install of iTunes

@nimarka1 if you need it to work in iTunes i would try to convert it in QuickTime to a format that iTunes Supports.

The video probably uses a video codec that iTunes supports, but an audio codec it doesn’t support.
