I am traveling to Australia (Perth, WA) later this year. And am planning to buy a camper-van there.
What do I all need to take off in this process? Insurance, registration etc.. and where do I do all this?
Is there a preferred insurer to use? Is there a preferred supplier for road-side-assistance?
I am driving from Perth, through the Nullabor, to Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns.
And am planning on selling the car there again.

Okay, so, I went out searching for a website of a campervan seller in Perth, and I found Traveller’s Autobarn. (Apparently Aussies spell “travelers” with two L’s.) Anyway, I figured that was a good place to start. Here’s the link: https://www.travellers-autobarn.com.au/ .
It seems like they frequently have travelers buy campervans and cars there, so you’re not alone! As for insurance, “The minimum legally required insurance is included with all registered vehicles. This is the compulsory third party personal (CTP) insurance. Known as the ‘green slip’ only in NSW. As long as the vehicle is registered it has this insurance and you do not need to sight the green slip.”
As for how to register it, I went to http://everything2.com/title/Backpacker%2527s+guide+to+buying+a+car+in+Australia for more information. This is a pretty good guide. From what I can tell, as long as the already-present registration isn’t up on the vehicle, you can fill it out with whoever is selling you the car and send it off. Then, since Australia offers a free forwarding service, just give your name to a post office in a big city.
Since Traveller’s Autobarn seems so helpful, I suggest that you email them at info@travellers-autobarn.com.au with any other questions. They even have a search were you’ll be able to locate a vehicle when the time comes.
Hope I could help, and best of luck in your travels! (Take me with you! ;)
@iWitch gave a good answer. I’ll just add that roadside assistance is different in every state. I use the NRMA, since I live in NSW, but Victoria has the RACV, Queensland the RACQ etc. These services all require membership though, and I’m not sure if you can become a member for a short period of time.
Why would you want to buy a camper van if you are only there temporarily? I was in Sydney and Perth a few months back and let me tell you that the transport network in Australia is pretty robust. You have an integrated ticketing system that will connect you to their buses, trains and ferries. And for places that these transportation medium will not reach, you always have the local taxis. While I was in Perth, I made use of Priority Pickup and Swan Taxis primarily while in Sydney, I was able to travel up to Kiama with their trains itself. They have a website called 131500 that is pretty extensive and will help you entirely with your travel plans.
