Any suggestions on how to keep that darn woodchuck from eating my green tomatoes?

Asked by wilma (16457points) August 13th, 2010

I have a nice compost pile out in the corner of the yard that he is free to dine at, and he does, but it seems he likes my green grape tomatoes and my morning glory vines better than old sweet corn and wilted lettuce.
I have seen him chomping on my veggies and flowers. I shooed him, and cursed him. I’m ready to get out the shotgun. Any ideas on how I get him to leave my garden alone?

set up a fence, make sure there are no burrowing holes and maybe get a pet dog. that is if you don’t wanna kill it. otherwise, shoot it and call a taxidermist

Killing it probably won’t do anything, because where there’s one groundhog, there are more. That said, there are natural remedies that you can try, and this website goes over them: http://www.helium.com/items/328628-how-to-keep-groundhogs-out-of-your-garden (solutions start on page 2).

Once discovered woody the woodchuck and his pals will decimate your garden within a matter of a few nights unless you are willing to do something drastic, immediately.

No need for the shotgun. A hollow point .22 is plenty.

One woodchuck means his greater family are living in the local woodchuck condo complex. Either you hire a professional to relocate the entire gang to WoodchucksRus, or you build a fence around the entire garden. It must be buried to at least one foot in depth, because the animals can tunnel.

Here people use electric fences to protect against deer, rabbits, small rodents, woodchucks, raccoons, skunks, etc. That brings each tomato to about $19.

Thanks all, I’m thinking of getting on the camo gear and stalking him. I can’t legally use a firearm here, but I might get out my air cannon and pelt him good.

edit; “one family is living…”
