Did you stay up to watch the meteor shower?

Asked by zenele (8260points) August 14th, 2010

If so, why? It would be seen in much better quality on TV, in the comfort of your living room. Is it to be outdoors? Is it for the “real” aspect of it – or the “was there” thing?

I’m just curious as to why we do these things – in some cases, staying up til all hours of the night to see these astro-phenomenon. (Here, they appeared between 3–5 a.m.!)

Fear not, though, 12 August 2011 there’ll be another chance if you missed it.

No, I am up because of nightmares. I hope to be up at my fortress of solitude next year for the meteor shower, though.

Yes, I stayed up with my two little children in hopes of seeing it, but unfortunately there was too much cloud cover over us. Then it started to rain, not meteor showers, but real wet showers. Instead of an astro show, we got a wet show. :(

I did. And I made a wish on every single meteor I saw, some for me, some for other people in my life. I know there’s nothing to it, but I will always fall back into my childhood when I see “shooting stars”.

No, it’s too bright in my neighborhood, and I was too lazy to drive somewhere dark. I loved astronomy as a kid and am angry with myself for having lost that passion. I always thought, and still do, that meteors are fascinating.

The last line in the original “The Thing” is… “Look to the skies.” Wish I had.

Not this past one, but I have for others. For the last one, a friend and I took his Jeep and a six-pack out into the county, reclined the seats and enjoyed the show.

I didn’t this year. I usually do because it is my birthday and I think the universe is saying hello. I like to watch in person because tv can’t capture the experience for me. The chill in the air, snuggling with my wife, the smell of the night, etc. It is an experience I enjoy, and a recorded one falls short for me.

@zenele o.k. because they are pretty and its a Kodak moment…It also gives amateur astronomer status to you.

Regrettably, the thunderstorms and heavy cloud cover prevented us from observing this display!

I meant to and totally forgot to find out where a good spot and time would be to see the Perseids. I will hope for better things in November when we have the Leonids in our area.

Thanks for the answers guys – @stevenb very poetic and nice; the universe is saying hello.

My grandson took a van full of his friends out to see it and I was still up when he got back, but I didn’t go out.

I did. I usually do, actually. This year it was accompanied by live accordion playing. Good times.
