Is watching television or or movie a singular focus activity for you?

Asked by BarnacleBill (16138points) August 15th, 2010

When you sit down to watch television or movie, do you do just that or do you do something else at the same time, such as folding laundry? Do you consider watching television or a movie as being busy?

Usually, although with TV that is changing as the commercial breaks lengthen.

When I watch a movie, I watch the movie. I don’t do anything else and I consider myself busy.

WIth TV, it depends. I have “eye TV” which are shows that I watch and pay attention to, like Mad Men, House, Criminal Minds and Lie to Me. And then I also have “ear TV” which are shows that I can watch while answering emails and paying bills and such, like Project Runway, CSI, Glee and The Big Bang Theory.

I usually have the moving watching me. I listen to it, but sometimes, I am writing, doing the laundry, reading, or polishing some silver.

I consider watcing television something that i only do when i am bored. i have an active lifestyle and watching the “boob tube” is near the bottom of my list of priorities.

I like singular activity while watching TV. But when I’ll do something else if it’s about the commercial time. Sometime I drink, eat, browsing while I watch a movie, but that depends on the movie,I’m more focus on good movie and less focus on ‘bad’ movie.

It really depends but for the most part if I am going to invest my time to watch anything on TV, movie, show whatever, I will want to see and hear it undisturbed or I would rather be doing something else.

I never watch t.v. and I hate to say it, but, I have a hard time sitting down and watching a movie all the through. I often have to stop and take a break, then go back at it. Unless, it’s a really, really good movie. I’m not sure what the deal is there..

If I’m watching a movie, I don’t want any distractions, no.

I usually have a very hard time sitting through an entire movie or TV show without getting up to do something in the middle.

Sometimes I get sucked in, though.

For movies, unless it’s a TV movie or a movie that I’ve already seen several times, my focus is on the movie. When it comes to television, unless I’m watching a show such as House or Fringe that really requires undivided attention, I am almost always multitasking. I go through my college mail, do homework, fold laundry, cook, etc.
However, even if I am not really doing anything else, I am not solely focused on the television or movie. Many people call watching television mindless, but for me, it is not. My mind is constantly active, analyzing everything that happens, whether it be on the program or other outside happenings. So really, I am never fully focused on television or movies.

We have DVR at my place, so when I watch a show, it’s a dedicated activity.

When I’m watching a movie or TV show, it is really the only thing I’m focused on. I tend to get a little upset when my friends and family try to talk to me, or do other things that distract me while I’m busy focusing. Just wait for the commercial! It’s the same with movies. Often, if I try to discuss a movie/show with somebody I was viewing it with, I’ll discover that they missed quite a few things because they weren’t paying attention, but multi-tasking instead. Hmmmpf.

If it’s an episode of House that I have seen several times, I will have a Sudoku going, but if it is a movie, or a tv show I havent seen before, it has my whole attention.

I’m pretty much the same way @MacBean is. I have some shows that get my undivided attention and others that I just listen too and glance at occasionally as I’m doing other things. Movies I like to actually sit down and enjoy the whole thing. Sometimes we’ll even pop up some popcorn for my husband and son to eat during the movie.

I don’t really watch much television, maybe an hour a week at the very most, and will do other stuff whilst it’s on.

I do rent about 3 movies a week though and when I’ve got a film on, basically, shush I’m watching!

I am a multitasker.. Yes I would be dusting and folding laundry or eating lunch and watching TV. I also have alittle distraction , a little girl. Thank God. You can now pause and rewind a show, DVR. Love it. Wonderful invention.

I treat TV and home movies more as background and optional rather than focused priority. I like to be doing something at the same time so I don’t feel I’m wasting time vegging out, it’s likely to be sorting/folding/ironing laundry or cooking. I’m one of those people who feels conversation between live humans is more important than remaining silent figures in front of a screen so I have the habit of interrupting the dialog and making people around me irritated which in turn makes me mad at them. Oh well.

It depends on the movie ..usually I’m also eating, fluthering and reading a magazine.

I watch TV a lot while I am doing my household tasks and Fluthering, but every repeat show seems new to me, evidence that I don’t invest too much of my time in them.

I have to really be in the mood to watch tv anymore. I rarely have the patience anymore to actually sit down and pay attention to a movie/tv show. I am more likely to use my free time playing a video game or reading a book.
