Are pancakes a healthy breakfast?

Asked by Zag_grad2010 (203points) August 15th, 2010

I usually eat eggs or cereal, but have gotten bored with them. I now eat pancakes about once a week and was wondering if it is equivalent to eating donuts. I work out a lot so I burn off the carbs.

Fluther pancakes are the best in the morning.

You can put berries in the pancakes. Plus lots of other chopped up goodies, even nuts. They are a fun breakfast. You can use jam instead of syrup or use honey and get all those extra benefits.
Yum

For my current diet, they’re perfect.

If you make pancakes from scratch, with whole wheat flour, eggs, and milk, then that can be pretty healthy. As far as the ready-made pancake mixes go, I doubt their healthiness——they’re too processed with too many strange chemical ingredients.

I like making Swedish pancakes on the weekends. It’s like a thick version of a crepe, but it’s delicious and wholesome, and easy to make.

Whole wheat homemade pancakes with peaches, blueberries or strawberries. You’re making me hungry,

Stop it, all of you. I need to go change my… you know. Quit it!

Once a week will not be bad for you.

Add some strawberries if it will make you feel better. ;)

I love Buttermilk pancakes with 100% maple syrup. I can’t stand fake maple syrup-corn syrup crap. Give’s me a tummy ache. Banana’s are good in pancakes with cinnamon and brown surgar sprikled on top.

If you do a search for pancakes at Allrecipes you will find all kinds of healthier pancake recipes. You can make them with whole wheat flour, oatmeal, cornmeal, and many other ideas. If the recipe calls for melted butter or oil, you can replace that with applesauce.

When I make pancakes, I make a lot of extras then freeze them. Wrap each serving in plastic wrap, put them in a big ziplock bag, and freeze. When you want some, warm them up in the microwave.

You have absolutely nothing to worry about. Even if you were on a diet, hardly any indulgence once in a while can hurt, let along pancakes with a dab of butter and syrup and some fruit. Especially since you exercise. Enjoy… and save one for me.

Not really. Of course they’re delicious and there are worse things you could be having for breakfast (health wise), but my idea of a healthy breakfast would consist of something like a fresh fruit salad with fresh orange juice and maybe some meuslie (not the ones with those overly sweet fake fruit pieces in them). Taken in itself (ie not considering whatever else you’re eating the rest of the week) pancakes once a week is not so bad health wise.

@Trillian

I SEE…or, should that be FEEL.

Pancakes to you,

They are good as far as energy. You can put a few (uncooked or toasted) oats in your batter and improve the nutrition.

They might be a “good” breakfast in the sense of taste.
But no, they aren’t healthy for you.
Oatmeal, maybe some turkey bacon, with some fruit maybe? Thats what I call a healthy breakfast.

But like others have said, if its only once a week I wouldn’t sweat it.
