The summary of the answer: have more income than expenditures, at a sustainable level of effort.

There are two ways you can increase your income. One is to have more customers; the other is to charge your customers more. In either case, keeping your customers happy is important: they need to feel like they are getting a good value for the money, and they need to either come back to you or refer other people to you.

Expenditures are not so easy to summarize. You should treat your salary as a necessary expenditure, because otherwise you’ll shortchange yourself; but other than that, any legal way of reducing costs is fair game.

And sustainability is key. You can make a lot of money and burn out, and that’s not good, because you’ll have a hard time getting going again. Better to make less, but to make it at a sustainable rate.

There’s not much more that can be said in generalities; each type of business is different.
