Tell him to talk to his HR department and see if he can change his plan. That might be less costly than buying your own.
Your situation is not very clear. You mention that you have to go into Philly for a hospital, does this indicate that you or your husband may have a pre-existing medical condition? If so, think twice before applying for new insurance.
It would helpful, however, if your information and question are stated more clearly.
I have diabetes and diverticulitis but we live in the suburbs and University of Penn is about 15 miles away from us !! We can’t change through his company but I was wonderiong if we could take the 150 a week he pays and put it towards an individual plan ???
One hundred fifty a week? It’s worth checking into other options, but you have to declare that you have a pre-existing condition, which has a tendency to drive the rates up or even make you ineligible for a policy. Is it possible to find another level to the insurance plan that you now have, a supplement package, maybe?
If you do get an offer, salespeople will be salespeople, make certain that you have the policy in hand and that you understand it completely and do not, I repeat, do not rely upon an insurance representative telling you that you would be covered for things where the policy states otherwise.
Ok , I know having diabetes really ruins things… My husbands company is in New Jersey and he has worked there for 30 years , They don’t offer any other plan just this one .. Insurance these day s really stinks !
Why can’t you change through the company? I had a crappy plan and wanted to ad dental to it. I offered to pay the extra, and was able to do that. What insurance company is he with?
Horizon HMO of New Jersey
There are only like 2 Doctors in our area too
I mean we lost vision this year too and he worked there for 30 years and they are screwing everyone in Pa
I have Horizon too. but mine is a direct access plan. You could ask his HR department to upgrade his policy and pay the difference. That would be cheaper than going on your own, and pre- existing would not apply.
but wouldn’t the hospitals would be the same right ?
With direct access, you don’t need a referral like you would with an HMO. As long as the hospital participates you could go there. Call the hospital you want to go to, and ask them if the are in network with Horizon. It is accepted at most hospitals I know of, and I am also in New Jersey.
It’s worht asking I guess , but I know Chester county hospital was on the list last year but not this year . I live closest to Crozier Chester hospital , so I will have him ask tomorrow… Thanks
You’re welcome! I do the insurance work on my job. I fight the insurance companies when they don’t want to pay a claim. Feel free to send me a comment if I can be of any more help!
Tomorrow morning, call 610–447-2000 and ask for Kathy Gallagher. She can tell you if they are in network with Horizon or not. That is the hospitals main number. I called to try and find out for you, but she is gone for the day.
Or you can call Horizon directly at 800–624-1110, and ask for a list of in network doctors and hospitals in your area. good luck!!
I feel so old and I am only going to be 50 and I am worrying about going to a hospital if I need one !! ha
Don’t feel bad. I’m one step ahead of you! I hit it last September!!

Hi, I am trying to change jobs within New Jersey and also currently have Horizon Direct Access. I use one physician who is out of network so the direct access is a big help. Do either of you know of other companies in NJ who offer this plan? I need to change jobs but don’t want to give up my doc. Thanks
