What are some great songs that relate to each act of Romeo and Juliet?

Why do you need to do this?

I have a good one in mind for the final act but I smell a homework assignment. My lips are sealed.

It may be, but i have done my research and come up with a few songs. Although they match in concept, i cannot find quotes from each to compare the two. For Act 1 i was thinking “Paint it Black” by the Rolling Stones. This matches Romeo’s melancholy mood, but i cannot find a suitable quote. As for Act 2, i chose “Endless Love” by Lionel Ritchie. There was no problem or this act because it seems as though he based the song off of Romeo and Juliet’s balcony scene. All I’d like from fellow fluther members are a few suggestions as a launching board.

Alright, well I figured “With or Without You” by U2 would be great for the final act. The lyrics are very simple but do seem relevant (to me anyhow):

“On a bed of nails she makes me wait and I wait without you.” (Romeo anxiously waiting to hear back from the Friar about Juliet. I suppose this is closer to the end of the fourth act but I think its still relevant).

“My body bruised, she’s got me with nothing to win and nothing left to lose.” (After a fight with Paris he discovers Juliet seemingly dead. This one leads nicely into the next line…)

“I cant live with or without you.” (They can’t be together because of the feud between the families and they can’t bear to be apart [one of them dead] thus committing suicide).

Wow, thanks paul. now at least i have a base for my essay. That helps a lot.

What about some of the best classical music ever written?

Ahhh, yes, the orchestral pieces definitaly provoke the same feelings as the book. I should’ve made my descriptoin a little clearer, what i need to find are music lyrics that coincide with Romeo an Juliet, not just music. If I could use Classical pieces then your suggestion would be even more helpful than they already are.

Um, Radiohead’s “Exit Music (for a film)” is literally about Romeo and Juliet. Specifically, it’s an imagined elopement, which could be matched either with their marriage or with Romeo’s flight. There are, I’m sure, a lot lot lot of songs that are actually about Romeo and Juliet. “Romeo and Juliet, they never felt this way I bet.” etc.

You might want to listen to the score of West Side Story. The original Broadway cast album is superior to the movie score but either one would fit the bill.

shirley Manson “I will die for u” in the Romeo and juliette soundtrack with leo decaprio and Clare Dane. The song is not in the movie but only on the soundtrack. Its amazing. Little old but noone has ever played or overplayed it

Thank you everyone for your help! All of this input helped me as a bases for my 11 page paper. At least now i wont have to spend 5 hours thinking about what songs relate to the acts. If i could find a way to repay you all, i would.
