How does the shell grow?

How did it grow bigger? I thought it would be impossible, so I’m curious.

Each year the small organism living inside adds more calcium to the shell. If you look at a shell closely, you can see that it has growth rings similar to a tree. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seashell
