What happens if you do not refrigerate soy milk?

Asked by Rememberme (661points) March 24th, 2008

I am a poor college student. During my spring break I got my parents to buy me a half gallon of Silk soy milk. I am used to buying soy milk that you don’t have to refrigerate. We left the soy milk in the garage. A few days later when I was packing up to go to back to school I saw the “Please keep refrigerated” notice. Is the soy milk safe to drink?

I believe its fine as long as it hadn’t been hot and remained sealed and unopened in that time.

I think there are some that are okay unrefrigerated and others that are not okay. Was the kind you bought in a Tetrapak like a milk carton? Or was it in a rectangular box like an oversized juice box? Tetrapak ones are sold refrigerated should be kept cold, while the juice box kind is okay unopened at room temp.

When I buy it its never refrigerated. Probably a good idea to put it in the fridge after opening though…
