What do you think the consequences should be if it is found out that Libya paid the British for the release from prison of the Lockerbie bomber?

When the Lockerbie bomber was released from prison, a doctor’s report said he had prostate cancer and had only months to live. He was released on compassionate grounds, and went home to Libya, presumably to die. Now, a year later, he is still alive. The US government is doing an investigation into the doctor’s report, alleged payoff of the British government for his release, and BP Oil’s involvement in the release. I believe there is something in there about BP wanting oil from Libya, too. The US government wants Libya to return him so he can do the remainder of his life sentence.
what do you think should be the consequences if it is found out that he was released as part of a payoff deal?

I think it’s unlikely that Libya ‘paid’ for the bomber’s release. Things are rarely that straightforward, and the consequences of such a deal being leaked would be absolutely catastrophic.
It’s substantially more likely that the Scottish government was pressured, either by Westminster or by business interests, to release Al-Megrahi in order to smooth the passage of the proposed BP-Libya oil deal.
Then again, that’s to ignore the fact that Alex Salmond (First Minister of Scotland) is a firebrand socialist and nationalist who would resent taking orders from either the English or Big Business.
The real reason for Al-Megrahi’s release, at least as far as I’m concerned? Incompetence. Salmond probably thought he was doing the right thing by releasing him early on compassionate grounds, but by the sounds of things his government barely sought any medical advice before making its discussion. Truly disgraceful.
As for the consequences? Well, there aren’t any. We can’t get Al-Megrahi back. We can’t punish the Scottish government. The Senate have tried to summon Salmond to a hearing, but their request came across as patronising and bullying.
Although I feel slightly odd saying this, the best that can happen is that Al-Megrahi dies soon so as to put this issue to rest.
We should probably invade Britain for supporting the terrorists.
I cannot see any ‘consequences’ happening: the guy got out by pretending to be sick and the socialist government in power in the UK at the time probably did a ‘secret’ deal to get him off their backs. Sad really… I just feel sorry for all the relatives of those who died in the plane crash!
Anyway a far more pressing issue is when is USA going to pay reparations for it’s genocidal bombing tactics in Vietnam? or any of countless other atrocities involving the deaths of Millions. This issue is small fry, besides, Scotland prefers terrorists to American tourists lol,
I never understood how serving a life sentence her was released anyway. He should have died in prison.
I am Scottish and that’s the way our judicial system works. When a prisoner is dying he can be released on compassionate grounds to be with his family. I personally don’t have a problem with that, I think it is decent and humane and the prisoner’s family deserve it if not the prisoner. I do have a problem when the governments of other countries start to interfere with our affairs.
@flutherother well British criminal law is as reasonable as it gets in my opinion. it’s something British that i am actually modestly proud about.
I either the British government or Scotish government actually received money from Libya, then they should be given a vote of no confidence, elections should be held and new government formed. The officials that benefited from the money should spend the rest of their lives in jail and all the money should be repaid.
