Strange buzzing sound from TV?

Asked by zwingli (606points) August 21st, 2010

When my TV is connected to my cable box I get this strange buzzing sound. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions to help me?

Buzzing is usually an indication of a poor connection or a bad earth in one of the devices connected to it. It could also indicate that the box isn’t tuned correctly or the signal is poor. Try connecting another device such as a DVD player using the same cables and input. If it stops then the problem is with your box.

Do both devices have polarized power plugs? If not, try unplugging one of the units and turning the plug over so the pins are reversed. Sometimes there is a low level short in the return side of the power supply. If you have an oscilloscope you can see the voltage with respect to ground. If you don’t have one, it is easy to just to swap the plug.

Worriedguy is correct. chances are, the problem is not in the equipment, but rather in the electrical current for each. make sure both plugs are inserted into the wall electrical outlet in the same manner. if this is of no help, then turn the plugs around and re-insert.

Nothing serious, mine always does that. But if you start hearing ticking take cover, It’s a bomb!

We had the same problem and after checking with Cablevision, it was a very simple fix.
Turn on cable box. Increase volume on front of box to max (30).
Turn on TV. Decrease volume on front of TV to comfortable listening sound.
That’s it.By using the cable remote now to raise and lower the volume on the cable box instead of the TV, no buzzing whatsoever! (It was the TV too loud in the first place that was the problem.)
Could be all the other issues (old TV dying, cable wires not completely tight, bad wires, bad cable box, conflict with other electric wires or wireless devices) but this was OUR issue.
