Are seagulls really that common over parking lots?

Asked by ANef_is_Enuf (26839points) August 22nd, 2010

I had this conversation with my father yesterday, and neither of us were sure. We get a ton of seagulls at our malls and shopping centers – but we are relatively close to the Great Lakes. We also have another large body of water nearby.

So, does everyone have seagulls in their parking lots?

We lived in Colorado for 4 years and there were always lots of seagulls in the parking lots of the supermarkets. I figured they’d been blown way inland by storms. Seemed silly to have them there.

Yep, they are. But, there are many members of the gull family, some more terrestrial, and some true sea birds. Many get lumped into the seagull category, but there are differences.

@JilltheTooth I know, it is weird to have them out here.
I figured I would call them ingulls because there is no sea or ocean anywhere around here.

Ingulls, I like that. Maybe I will start using it.

In winter, gulls are everywhere here. I never see them during the rest of the year unless I am closer to the coast. Pigeons and crows, however, hang out year ‘round. The pigeons just eat and get fat, but those crows can become vicious urban buggers.

When I went to go visit a friend out in UT, I called them mormon bombers. only because they are the state bird out there.

@JilltheTooth You’re right, that is less fun than believing they traveled hundreds of miles from the sea just to eat french fries from the parking lot of the local supermarket in my town. I’m gonna go back to believing that. :)

I too am near one of the Great Lakes. We have them in every parking lot.
Never park under a cantilevered light post.

@TheOnlyNeffie The added security is more than offset by resultant poor windshield visiblity.

There are few things as disgusting as when the wipers make that first pass and smear the poop-goop across the windshield. Yuk!

We have tons of gulls here in central Illinois. Especially at all the Walmarts and Kmarts in the area. what is it about those specific stores?

I love seeing them, even their poo, because they remind me of my time spent along the California coast.

Here in florida we do and we get cow birds and even things that resemble turkey.I can’t remember the name but the are butt ugly. Ugly butt bird I call them. We get vultures too.

I haven’t seen a lot of them here in Kansas. We have a few random ones here or there, but not many. When we were in Texas, I didn’t see any at all (we were in the desert). In Delaware, they were everywhere.

They’re all over the place here, but we’re very close to Long Island Sound, with a lot of beaches nearby. I don’t remember ever seeing one when I lived in Indiana, and the sight of them hanging around the grocery store or Dunkin Donuts here makes me stare.

Tornados have blown seagulls into Nashville from the east coast. we have at least a 1,000 that are now calling Nashville their home. most reside near Red Lobster restaurants to invade their nightly trash cans of fish remains. the parking lot is their “hangout”.

Oh hell yeah. I live up in the mountains, and besides sparrows, seagulls make up the vast majority of our urban birds. Believe it.
