One of my favorites that far too few people have seen is Layer Cake. Give it a try.

Try some Robert Altman flicks like The Player and Nashvile
Alos:
Crazy Heart
LA Confidential
Chinatown
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?

Watch The Fall. It’s beautiful to look at, well acted, stars an astonishingly handsome Lee Pace and an adorable young girl, and has the right amount of heart-warming and heart-break. It doesn’t have the quickest pace, but it gets good.

Other films I would recommend based on your favourites:

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki o kakeru shôjo)
The Truman Show
The Royal Tenenbaums

@janbb I love What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?. Leo’s performance in that is, to this day, one of my favourites.

You’ve probably already seen some of these, but I would recommend Se7en, Memento, Mulholland Drive, The Machinist, Mothman Prophecies, American History X, Requiem for a Dream, Towelhead, Pulp Fiction, Life of David Gale, Don’t Say a Word, Trainspotting, Pi, Identity, Sling Blade, Fargo, Girl, Interrupted, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, Amelie, The Truman Show, Boogie Nights, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Savages.

Pretty much everything @Vunessuh recommended and
Dark City
Snatch
Lock stock and two smoking barrel

I will watch anything by Michel Gondry, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and Christopher Noland. Requiem for a Dream and Trainspotting, however, I doubt I could ever watch again because they left me feeling so utterly depressed.

Green Mile, River Runs through it, and Fried Green Tomatoes.

No recommended film list would be complete without To KIll a Mockingbird on it – whatever types of movies you like.

I just saw the Illusionist. It is quite a nice film. There is no dialogue at all.

I just finished watching The Lovely Bones. Despite what most of the critics said, I found it riveting and beautiful.

And, last but not least, “It Is A Wonderful Life!”

I think you’ll like A Simple Plan

If you like Donnie Darko then check out Edward Scissor Hands.

gravity's avatar

@jonsblond That is another favorite of mine! It is a great movie about the effects of greed.

You like movies that don’t make a lot of sense. 1948’s Portrait of Jennie with Joseph Cotten and Jennifer Jones is a direct spiritual ancestor of Donnie Darko.

The Draughtsman’s Contract is a very strange and fascinating film.

Um… Perhaps Requiem For A Dream, Silent Hill, and High Tension. I realize this might make no sense whatsoever, but they’re really good movies, and I couldn’t think of anything else like American Beauty. Wait… What about… the IRON MAN MOVIES!!!!1111

INGLORIOUS BASTARDS was so good… the sets were delicious… I could smell the varnish in the basement bar… feel the carpeting in the on screen movie theater… the casting and the performances that quientn tarantino got from them! diane kruger… and that col hans landa, gracious and charming while butchering women and children sent chills down my spine!

gravity's avatar

@doublebogie one of the biggest chick flicks ever but I do love it! I don’t usually go for many sappy love stories…

doublebogie's avatar

@gravity You’re right about the chick flick and I’m not usually one for them or sappy love stories either but it was very endearing and one of the few of that genre that I would recommend. I guess I was in touch with my feminine side that night. Glad you agreed.
