What Windows updates should I install, or which ones do you install?

I am asking this question as I just restored my laptop to factory settings and am now faced with 108 Vista windows updates to install. I usually find in the past that after installing the updates my machine gets a bit sluggish. I just wanted to know what people do if they try to avoid slowing down their machine too much. Do you ignore updates, or install only a few? I usually just ignore the IE updates (as I don’t use it) and go for the rest.
