I was wondering if you could secure specific folders without having to sign in and out of gmail all the time, i.e., archives, chats, etc. Anyone know?

If by secure you mean put a password on, I’m not sure.
You could probably get features like that in an email application on your computer. I don’t know any off the top of my head which can do that, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a few out there.
On the other hand, if you simply don’t wish to sign into gmail every time you want to look at your email, most email clients automatically sign in. I personally prefer Thunderbird
Yeah – I’m looking to put a password on specific folders in gmail.
What’s the use case here? Why are you wanting to further secure folders from yourself?
I ask because maybe there’s another way to skin this cat.
No, I want to be able to leave my account open but to not have other people who may visit my computer read items in certain folders.
Well, I cannot see the Gmail team offering this feature… since your account is already password protected.
An alternative you might consider is to setup multiple Gmail accounts – one for each of the things you’d normally label/folder – and access them all individually in the same browser instance. It’s officially supported now.

Other people have requested the same feature you describe, but there’s been no action on it.
Thanks @robmandu – not the answer I want but that seems to be the answer for now.
