Do you like driving & are you a good passenger when the need arises?

Asked by ucme (50047points) August 25th, 2010

Yeah basically do you enjoy or endure driving, or maybe somewhere inbetween. How about those occasions for whatever reason you find yourself as a passenger. Are you cool with that or does the control freak in you kick in.

I love driving and I get jittery when I’m not the driver.

I actually LOVE driving. I’ve made many trips from Illinois to New York (14 hour drive) in one day. Whenever my wife and I go somewhere, I always drive. I don’t know what it is, but I could definitely take up driving as a career. My uncle and cousin are drag racers, so maybe it runs in the family.

I really enjoy a nice stretch of open road, whilst driving by myself and listening to some good tunes. I find it pretty freeing, and it always puts me in a good state of mind. When I’m not driving, however, it can feel a bit stressful.

Good question. I usually prefer to be the driver. Being a passenger usually makes me nervous. Especially when the other person drives as poorly as I sometimes do.

I like driving, and no I’m not a good passenger.

Passengers have screamed while in my car.
They are big babies ;)
I am not a back seat driver and don’t mind if someone else drives…except no one’s touching my ‘58 Impala—When I get one—;)

I have never been behind the wheel of a car and am a neurotic mess when others are driving. A friend offered to give me a ride home once and sped down the freeway. I almost threw up.

It’s bad. I know. I’m working on it.

I prefer to be the driver. I can be a good passenger though, usually falling asleep quickly.

Driving to me is a way to get somewhere.

I love riding in a car. Road trips.

I love driving! (Though definately more enjoyable on the M6 north of Preston than on the M25 down here – although I do intend to do a midnight drive all the way round the M25 just for the hell of it before I leave down here)... As a passenger, I would say I’m more of a sleeping partner! (Probably best I keep my eyes closed to stop myself slamming on the “brakes”!)

I’d not say I “enjoy” driving. Plus, I tend to be a nervous passenger like @Austinlad regardless of how well they drive. So I can’t win.)-:
Give me a glass of alcohol before we leave and I’m good.
We’d drive from Arkansas to Illinois and, except for the eating part, I found it fairly boring.

Dislike driving. Prefer my motorbike. Driving feels like dragging too much extra tin around with me. Car is definatley only for transporting passengers and luggage. All other times, I’d rather be on the bike or shank’s pony.

I’m not the best driver. My girlfriend can attest to that. I have a mighty lead foot.

I have no problem being the passenger. I tend to take over the CD player, though. :)

OpryLeigh's avatar

I’m happy being the driver or the passenger.

I love driving and I often feel like I drive better than my friends. It’s not completely unfounded; they all speed like crazy and I don’t, really. Most of the time, I’m totally fine being the passenger, but when my friends start really speeding, it bothers me and I will tell them to slow down. People do know me as a backseat driver. I’m saving their lives, damn it. :)

…& i GOT ONE TOO!!!! Falls off chair like a big wuss!!

@ucme let’s max each other out, baby!

I would rather be a passenger. My work causes me to drive everyday. Would be nice to be in the other seat.

I generally enjoy driving, so long as I am not caught in gridlock and surrounded by morons who are too busy yakking on their cellphone to notice that there is a car with a big fucking skull on the hood in the lane they are trying to merge into. Get me on the back roads or a not-too-busy highway and I will enjoy myself.

There are very few drivers that I can be a passenger for without being a nervous wreck. Fortunately, my wife is one of those few. Most people are either too unaware of the road, or too aggressive and impatient to feel safe in the same vehicle with.
For instance, one person I know would’ve been fine if they had waited about five seconds to make a turn but they just had to turn now and wound up uninjured but their rear fender was shoved in far enough that their rear left tire is exposed and the back doors no longer open. He thinks nothing of gunning it and doing 45 in a 30 zone to beat a yellow light. I don’t like riding with him.

There are a few drivers that I feel are too passive (like my wife) but those people tend to be cautious enough that I can take a nap, secure in the knowledge that they won’t get me killed by taking unnecessary risks. Of course, I can’t ride with them in heavy traffic or bad weather since they tend to either not drive under those conditions or freeze up on the road.

Love to drive but can be a passenger for long or short trips. I’ve been known to fall a sleep when my wife is driving.

My husband says I’m a great back seat driver. LOL
I rather not drive if I have a driver I feel drives safely. Only know two people I feel I can take a nap when they drive.
Everyone else in my family drives like maniacs. When I drive everyone falls asleep because they know I am careful. Wish I could say the same.

I am a wonderful passanger. My driving is alittle bit to be desired. My husband says I suck.

Just wake me up before we get totally lost. (Note: map reading tutorial needed)

I like driving, but don’t enjoy having THE passenger driver hit the brakes and flap his arms when i’m taxi-ing after a night out.

(i don’t like driving in the dark much either)

I’m a good driver, but i don’t drive often anymore, me and my husband go out together just about always, so he always drives. I’m a good passenger too – i usually find some drivers annoying, especially those who are always complaining about everybody else on the roads. I’ve been known to cause some shock though when i suddenly yell out “watch out!” due to birds or other small animals in the road that i suspect the driver may not have seen.

downtide's avatar

I can’t drive, and due to a visual handicap I will never be allowed to. But I’m a good passenger and I’m an expert navigator & map-reader.
