This story, by Ernest Hemingway, is something that have puzzled me quite a bit. So I was wondering, what do you think the theme and message is in this short story? thanks.

A rather chauvinistic view of a day in the life of a country doctor a century ago. Written in Hemingway’s characteristic machismo style. His character treats the lady having the baby with less concern than the old fisherman has for his catch in “The Old Man and the Sea”.

Wow, great story. Love Hemingway! At first blush I think it might be about rebirth. I’ll have to read it a few more times and keep thinking about it. GQ.
