Is it possible to repair a ten year old, "boxer's" fracture?

Asked by truecomedian (3937points) August 27th, 2010

It’s a source of nearly constant pain, it hurts now as I write this. Is there surgery for this and are there surgeons who perform this procedure? It’s the fifth metacarpal, it’s bowed instead of straight. Hurts. This would be a good time in my life to get it done.

I’ve had a “boxer’s” fracture for many years and fortunately for me it only bothers me a little when it’s cold. Examining mine, I would say that it’s possible to perform the surgery but it seems as though it would have to be re-broken and set in a brace…but I’m not a doctor! Lol!

One of my team mates got boxers fracture, they taped it up to avoid movement for a little over a week, and was advised to use that hand little as possible- Essentially like a broken nose, it needs time to heal.

@truecomedian check this out. A good explanation of non-surgical treatment and surgical treatment.

@boxer3
It’s all good, wish I had gone to the doctor and gotten it set in a cast. I was stupid. It was healing good and I rebroke it over Ms. October.

@RomanExpert is right. i fractured my hand in the same place and the doctors said if it heals bad they could re-brake and insert pins to keep it straight.
