Can you help me create an epic CD for work?

Asked by Vunessuh (16727points) August 27th, 2010

I work for a promotional company and early every morning we meet at the office before we disperse into teams and promote our service.
The age range of the office is 18–27 and before being sent out, we listen to upbeat music to wake ourselves up and get the blood pumping.
I’ve been asked to create a new CD for the office. The music they want is unfortunately not something I have much of in my iTunes so I need more suggestions.

Here are the requirements:
No slow, melancholy or sleepy music. (So basically anything pretty like Sia, Mazzy Star, Norah Jones or OneRepublic is out. BOO!)
No instrumentals.
No heavy metal or anything too dark.
Hip hop is okay, but nothing too ghetto” – the boss.
No country or anything too ‘pop’, like Britney or boy band type stuff.

Here are some examples of what they want:

Bulletproof by La Roux

That’s Not My Name by The Ting Tings.

Sexy Chick by David Guetta.

Let The Beat Rock by The Black Eyed Peas.

No You Girls by Franz Ferdinand.

Even something techno-ish is fine like this.

If you can provide links that would be great. :)

Thank you!

Flash Gordon by Queen! You can totally find a version without the goofy intro here, I’m sure.

You can’t go far wrong with Queen, really.

Try these:

The Whitest Boy AliveFireworks

KlaxonsEchoes

YeasayerAmbling Alp

Broken BellsMongrel Heart

I can suggest more like this, if they’re what you’re looking for.

Crawling Towards the Sun by The Hush Sound
Down to the Well by Pixies
Us by Regina Spektor
Killer Queen by Queen

On the dancefloor and One love by David Guetta.

Thé à la menthe (download here).

Hung up by Madonna.

And if classics aren’t verboten, You’re the best, Eye of the tiger and, of course, the Rocky theme.

EDIT: Oh oh, and Imma be by the Black Eyed Peas.

@aprilsimnel Thank you for the suggestion!
@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities & @muppetish I personally really like those songs, but for the office, I need something less alternative rock and more dance-like and techno. The group of people I work with aren’t really an alternative rock bunch. They want more club music than anything.
@bob_ I really like One Love. Thanks! :)

Usher – omg

That is nice and fresh, and gets people moving. Also its a club banger out here in vegas right now.

@wgallios That song works. Thanks!
@truecomedian Um, yeah, that’s what they want. I have to listen to it every morning. It’s some bewshit. Thanks for the suggestions. :)
@rebbel Thank you! :)

Would Television Rules the Nation / Crescendolls by Daft Punk work?

The only thing close to techno I listen to other than Daft Punk is Japanese electronica and I doubt you’re office mates would put to listening to that each week. Good luck hunting for songs ;)

MAN 2 MAN MEETS MAN PARRISH- Male Stripper spring to mind :-/

Being a half ass DJ myself, I can suggest some. Tell me if any of these work.

Boys Noize – Starter (Techno) Shit, I didn’t see no instrumentals… That song is awesome, though…
Audio Bullys – Shotgun (House)
Basement Jaxx – Good Luck (Dance)
TC – Where’s My Money (Drum & Bass)
Rusko – Woo Boost (Dubstep)
Major Lazer – Hold The Line (Dancehall/Electro)

I tried to do a wide range of genres, so if you like any of those I certainly have a lot more of all of them.

It’s actually illegal to have music playing in an office environment unless you get a licence to play them.

Oh, also The Chemical Brothers have a bunch of good stuff like The Boxer, The Salmon Dance (Which is just plain silly), and All Rights Reversed (with Klaxons).

Alright, everyone sit the fuck down. I got this. Driving to high school at 7 every morning, having an 8 am class last year, and making party playlists has prepared me well for this moment.

11th Dimension by Julian Casablancas

Daylight by Matt and Kim

Zero by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Taper Jean Girl by Kings of Leon

Love Game by Lady Gaga

Dominos by The Big Pink

You Make My Dreams by Hall & Oates

Hearts on Fire by Cut Copy

Why Can’t I Be You? by The Cure

American Boy by Estelle feat. Kanye West

Club Can’t Handle Me by Flo Rida feat. David Guetta

I Like It Enrique Inglesias Feat. Pit Bull (We did this song for our talent show at camp, and now I can’t listen to it without picturing 11 year old girls dancing. But for the unpolluted minds, it should be a fun, upbeat song, lol.)

Cooler Than Me by Mike Posner

DJ Got Us Falling In Love Again by Usher feat. Pit Bull

Little Secrets by Passion Pit

My First Kiss 3OH!3 feat. Ke$ha God, artist’s names are getting really ridiculous, aren’t they? This song is a little obnoxious, but once the beat gets goin’, it’s like helllll yeah.

Disclaimer: Work productivity may plummet due to everyone BUSTIN’ A MOVE!

le_inferno's avatar

Just saw your addition that they want mostly club music and not alternative stuff… I’ve got alternative sprinkled in there, but dammit they are totally upbeat! Definitely got some club music in there, though.

One more for the club: Dynamite by Taio Cruz.

Vunessuh's avatar

@dverhey I can totally tell you DJ. Thanks! I love, love Good Luck. If you have more songs like that please let me know! :)

@actuallery Ain’t that some shit? Good thing I only work there. Thanks for the heads up.

@le_inferno Alright. I lol’ed at everyone sit the fuck down. I got this. I think I peed a little, actually. XD Awesome suggestions. Thanks so much! I took tons from your list. :)
Even the one’s that aren’t good for the office, I put on my own personal playlist so thanks everyone for your answers!

Similar to Basement Jaxx. Lets see…

Basement Jaxx – Raindrops (Same group, different song)
Groove Armada – Time And Space (Awesome band, awesome song, very 80’s)
Groove Armada – Get Down
Deadmau5 – Ghosts n Stuff (There’s an instrumental version as well, but this one is a little more friendly to those not all that into house)
Crookers – Remedy feat. Miike Snow
The Crystal Method – Come Back Clean (With the lead singer from Metric, Emily Haines.)

I could do this for a long time.

Cherub Rock by The Smashing Pumpkins.

This isn’t at all appropriate but I’m pretty sure there is no music more epic than Nerd Metal.

I’m pretty sure all of Battlelore’s songs are about Tolkien. It’s epic.

These might actually work.

Snook – Mister Cool
Parov Stelar – The Mojo Radio Gang

jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities's avatar

@fundevogel Fuck. Yesss! I’m going to listen to Battlelore about 6284731034253674237586934578399312 times now. Gracias.

@jonsblond Actually, I’d better make it 628473103425367423758693457839931 and 3 times. It’s a long damn drive.

Ok!! Just one more… Sleater-Kinny ‘Oh!’ my absolute fav… three girls who were sooo great. This is worth a listen!

Tomfafa's avatar

Please allow me one more… then I’ll shut up.
Listen To My Heart – Nancy LaMott… Makes your heart soar.
My parents took me to hear her when I was a teenager, like many new yorkers we loved her. Nancy came to NYC broke but loved to sing… just as she getting into her own she died of cancer in 1995. She married her love in the hospital one hour before.
