Do I have to bleach my hair?

Asked by ivysaurgoesrawr (106points) August 27th, 2010

I want to die my hair red (like this http://www.poptower.com/pic-19991/ariana-grande.jpg?w=450&h=450). My natural hair is very dark though. Is there anyway to get my hair this color red without bleaching it first?

Ohhh, please go to a professional for this. There is a lot of potential to badly damage your hair if you do it at home.

Trust me. :)

But I just remembered that there is a line of haircolor made specifically for dark hair, and it comes with several reds. One of which is really quite bold. I have to find the name of it, and when/if I do I will pass it on. That would be alright to do at home if you can find it.

edit: Okay, I found it. Check out L’Oreal Excellence HiColor (for dark hair only.) The color that I had in mind specifically is called Red Hot, but of course you can choose whatever you like best. You have to buy it online or from a beauty supply store, you won’t find this in a drug store. Hope this helps! :)

Magic eight ball says yes.

@TheOnlyNeffie So is this applied like your average home color? No bleaching?

Correct. You wouldn’t have to bleach your hair to use this dye.
Keep in mind though, that once you have lightened your hair (using whatever method), it will not be the same afterwards. Red washes out very quickly, so you’ll want to buy a color saving shampoo. After the hair has been lifted you will have to continue coloring it with the red, or ultimately have it dyed similar to your natural color.
That applies to either scenario. (whether you bleach or use this at home color.)

If you decide against this route and opt for bleach, I’m sticking to my guns about taking your hair to a pro. :) Good luck, hope this was helpful!

Why bleach it though. You’re adorable as a brunette. I say leave it. Just change your wardrobe if you need to do something.

@TheOnlyNeffie I think I’ll try this home color, I’ve bleached my hair before for purple highlights & it is NOT fun. I had blonde streaks for three years and my hair was so damaged. And that was having it done professionaly.

@SeventhSense Thank you, but my dark hair is such a contrast to my pale skin, and I’m looking for a fun, light summer look.

The specific color that I mentioned is REALLY bright, so I would browse their color selection. Best of luck to you!

You look tan. Oh, and summers over.

@TheOnlyNeffie thank you!
@SeventhSense I’m not, it’s editing and lighting. & yeah. i know.

I like brunettes better so maybe I’m biased.

@SeventhSense And I like redheads better, but my what my hair color should be was not the point of this question at all.
