Mac software that BATCH-converts avi to mp4?

I’m trying to find Mac-based software that will convert many avi files at a time into mp4 files (source files will all be the same resolution, codec, etc.—and I’m fine having the resulting files all be same resolution/etc.). Open source (or just free) software would be better if it exists, but I’m also willing to pay a little.

I use either Viddy Up or Evom. Evom is free and it provides much better quality for its price. You can give that a shot.
MPEG Streamclip looks great so far! Working on my first conversion now.
Thanks for all replies so far. I should have mentioned the current version of Handbrake, the one that does this, will not run on “this kind of Mac” (installer said that and didn’t provide details; I’ve got a mid-2006 MBP running 10.6).
I figured out that iTunes itself batch-converts, but with no control over output’s filesize, quality or resolution (and verrrrrrry slowly).
@marmoset Hmm, well, yours isn’t that old and it’s running all the right stuff. I don’t know why it won’t work.
Evom is working great, although it is really simplistic (almost no options available to adjust qualities of the resulting file).
MPEG Streamclip has excellent, detailed controls/options (way better than Evom) but it doesn’t seem to be working for me—have tried various files and settings, and all resulting files have the correct duration but play as an all-black image (whether played with VLC or with QT Player).
