Does the scale of justice have any set judgment if it is presented tipping right or left?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) August 30th, 2010

Say the scale is tipped to the right, does this represent guilt? Innocence?

Could it be tied to the position of plaintiff in a court setting?

Wait, what’s happening? Can you clarify?

Only if a payoff is involved. Or if there is more substantiating evidence.

Justice is blind because it (she) is not about right or wrong. IT IS about getting the scale to tip in your favor.

Hopefully “justice” prevails.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir you have seen the scale of justice right? Well it is usually depicted empty and level, waiting to take on the burden of judgment. So…which side does the defense lay its evidence?

If you were to see a scale of justice depicted tilting to one side, could an idea be formed as to its intention.

For instance, if you saw a picture of OJ, with a scale of justice tipped to one side….

What would you think?

You might think, ah, this is a scale showing this man is guilty. However, there might be some tradition that determines the side of the scale that represents innocence.

@Ltryptophan I have seen the depiction, yes – I’m assuming prosecution and defense each try to put their weight and then the verdict reflects the side which has more weight. The defense can lay its evidence on either side but I’m not sure if it’s customarily shown as one or the other.

Lady Justice won’t disclose which side indicates guilt, because since she is blindfolded, if the guilty knew that, they would just slip some extra weights on the innocent side.

She just piles up what the prosecution and defense presents, then announces the verdict. Does she ever get it wrong? Of course she does. What do you expect? She’s can’t see a thing.
