What is the shortest plane ride available?

Asked by Akua (4730points) August 30th, 2010

I know this is a weird question but I am thinking about taking a job that is 3½ hrs away from NYC by car. My only worry is being able to get to NY a couple times per month to see my daughter and take care of personal business. Driving in bad winter weather may pose a risk. Are there flights for very short distances like what I’m talking about? I’m assuming that if it takes 3½ hrs by car that a plane ride would be about 15–30 minutes? What do you guys say?

Maybe you could charter a flight on a dink of a plane through a small airport? Or call one of the larger ones and see if they can help. :)

It would really depend on where you would be flying from. That would be the thing to look into. Where is the closest airport? Because the trip to the airport is something you would have to take into consideration. And is where you would be coming from on an Amtrak route? Taking the train into the city is very convenient, though not as fast a flying. I know you can fly from Philly to New York and that only a couple hours drive, and that’s a forty minute flight.

I’d be going from Binghamton, NY to New York City if I get the job. Binghamton is up in the mountains close to the Poconos and driving is dangerous in the winter because of the black ice, snow and sleet. It snows a lot up there from what I hear and the snow stays on the ground a long time.

Is Amtrack available? With the new rules at airports it may well be quicker to go by rail.

When I used to fly out of Grand Forks, ND the plane stopped at Fargo, a distance of about 80 miles before going on to Chicago or Minneapolis. It took longer to check in and board the flight than it did to drive.

@lucillelucillelucille I will look into the small planes and do a web search on what services the airlines have. Thanks.

@lillycoyote @WestRiverrat I never thought about taking the train as an option. Thanks, I’ll look into that as well.

I checked here and it doesn’t look like your little airport in Binghamton has flights to NYC

I don’t know where the next closest one would be.

Edit: I looked into a little more and looks the only way is by bus.

Or you could fly from Binghamton to Philly then Philly to NYC, expensive and time consuming.
But it would keep you off the roads.

@lillycoyote Your great. And thorough. I like that. Thanks.

@Akua You’re welcome. I kind of enjoy the sleuthing sometimes and I have nothing better to do right now. Good luck.

I flew from Brussels to Frankfurt and that only took 20 minutes

@Akua I did a little sleuthing too. What I found is: You have to make at least one stop to get from Binghamton to NYC. Lowest fare I found was about $275 if you wanted to take 9 hours to get there and about the same to get back. Quickest route was one stop 2h20m each way but it cost close to $900.

if your a skydiver you can take short flights

Akua's avatar

@WestRiverrat those prices are rediculous and the amount of time is worse. I’ll look into trains and buses. Thanks for the sleuthing detectives.

@talljasperman are you crazy? And then where do I put my luggage?

A friend of mine was flying a small plane when immediately after take off, the fuel pump broke and the engine died. Luckily he had enough runway left to put it down safely. His flight was about three seconds.

I guess it depends where you live. I’ve flown from Manchester to Dublin, the flight was 45 minutes.
