Why can't dual citzens be members of the Australian parliament?

Asked by jonno (1067points) March 25th, 2008

Dual citizens must renounce their non-Australian citizenship before the election or they can be disqualified, as has happened in the past. Is there a reason for this?

Wikipedia might be a little more helpful, but it is most likely to prevent a conflict of intrest.

Simple, dual citizen are viewed with suspiction that they are a spy.

It’s to deter spies from attempting to take over the government.
