What can I do to literally stay cool at my job tomorrow?

Asked by erikaziger (345points) August 31st, 2010

It is supposed to be 95* tomorrow and I work in a small, non-air conditioned corner store. We have one fan and I know I will be sweating a lot. What else can I do to cool myself and the space?

Put your underwear in the cooler.

Keep hydrated. You could always stick an icepack under each armpit when you don’t have customers.

Bring your own fan. Bring a rag and wet it and then place it around your neck.

dress very light and wet bandana around the neck. freeze bottle of water.

Get a couple of the gel cool packs. Fasten one to the small of your back with a pad between it and your skin (so you don’t get frostbite). When it warms up swap it with the other one that you stored in the fridge or freezer.

Do you have a walk-in freezer? If so, pop in now and then.
Set up a bucket of ice in front of the fan.
Go outside now and then so that the inside of the store feels cooler.

Do what you can to keep your feet cool. For whatever reason, the state of the feet gets a disproportionately large amount of your attention. If your feet are cool, the rest will seem more bearable.

Do not start thinking about how hot it is.

@papayalily Very smart, also tie cold wet rags ( or long socks, that’s what i use ) around your wrists.

If you have a freezer or a cooler at work, keep a spare shirt in there.
Avoid all hot food that day at least until you get off from work.

Incidentally, and in light of @Brian1946‘s suggestion, I have a request.
I’d heard once (on a sitcom, which is little better than my dog for getting reliable info) that it’s actually better to drink hot liquids on hot days, though I’m not sure what’s better about it.
Could you stick to hot beverages and let me know how it goes?

Drink alot of ice water and don’t wear pants if you’ll be behind a counter XD

rock a pair of speedos and nothing else. the owner should get the message and spring for a cheap window unit near the checkout.

keep drinking a lot of water, if that’s not going to cool you down at least it will keep you hydrated and safe

Here is what works for me:
1) Take a really cold shower (as cold as you can stand) before you go, so you go into work chilly.
2) Take follks’ previous advise about wrapping an ice pack around back, neck, etc.
3) If you have access to ice (you can always buy a bag of ice and stick in a cooler), put ice behind you knees, on your wrists, in the inside crook of your elbows, the back of your neck, etc. any of the key points to cool you off. Also, eat ice as you go through the day, just not too much too fast or your stomach might ache.
4) Take a small spray bottle and spritz your face, arms any exposed skin and then stand in front of the fan.
Hope this helps!

For less than ten bucks you can pick up a spray bottle/battery powered fan combination at a CVS or Duane Reade type store. Turn the fan on and spritz your face with water every 20 or 30 minutes.

Don’t believe that drink hot water thing. Bring gel cool packs and wet rags. If you wet your skin and then have a fan blowing when you skin is wet will help keep you cooler. Keep yourself hydrated.

Why won’t they buy a space air conditioner? They are not very expensive.
