Heroic? Is killing 4 people, one of them a pregnant mother - in their car - is that heroic?

Asked by zen_ (6281points) September 1st, 2010

This is what the Hammas claims on their website.

From the NYtimes – and you can tell by the way they write settlements as if Israel is in a completely different region and unrelated to the attack – that they are unbiased and neutral ~.

Anti-Zionists and Semites – enjoy!

JERUSALEM — The killing of four Israeli settlers, including a pregnant woman, in the West Bank on Tuesday evening rattled Israeli and Palestinian leaders on the eve of peace talks in Washington and underscored the disruptive role that the issue of Jewish settlements could play in the already fragile negotiations.

The military wing of Hamas, the Islamic group, claimed responsibility for the attack — in which gunmen fired on a vehicle carrying two men and two women at a junction near the city of Hebron — and described it on its Arabic Web site as a “heroic operation.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the “atrocious murder,” which Israeli officials said seemed calculated by Hamas to upset the negotiations, which it virulently opposes. Mr. Netanyahu, en route to Washington at the time, said, “Terror will not determine the borders of Israel or the future of settlements.” He ordered Israel’s security forces “to pursue the attackers without any diplomatic restraint,” his office said.

The Palestinian Authority also condemned the attacks, which occurred just before its president, Mahmoud Abbas, met with Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. A Palestinian spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, said the attack by Hamas, the authority’s rival, underlined “the need to proceed quickly toward a just and lasting peace agreement,” which he said would “put an end to these acts.”

cowardly. killing is not a way to make a statement.
I’m sorry, zen. this is too close for comfort to your beautiful sunrise.

But there is no easy answer, is there?? Maybe for the Gaza Strip, but for some reason, senseless killing will always continue, IMO, sad but true.

tell me the answers, you are so close to the questions, my friend.
so sorry for the torment.
In KY, the baby would count for another life.

Despicable!! I think Nabil Abu Rudeineh is being overly optimistic thinking a “a just and lasting peace agreement,” would “put an end to these acts.”

They don’t have the balls to go after a legitimate target.

Sounds to me like someone using a political/religious agenda to justify their own urge to be a murderer.

Killing a pregnant mother is only acceptable if she’s about to birth the anti-christ, and if you think she’s about to birth the anti-christ you’re probably insane so don’t do it anyways.

Wait, why is the article a piece of shit?

kevbo's avatar

I didn’t realize the NYT was Israel’s paper of record.

gorillapaws's avatar

All acts of terrorism are despicable. Period.

@nikipedia I believe @zen_ doesn’t like the rest of the article because it mentions how the potential for expanding Israeli settlements may be a deal-breaker in the peace process.

I think it’s strange he believes there to be so many “Anti-Zionists and Semites” on Fluther.

Disgusting! No act of terrorism is justifiable. Killing a pregnant mother or any other humans is WRONG!

I find it highly suspicious that there’s no “anti-semetic” option on the flag comments menu. Some of the Fluther staff must be anti-semites.

Same ol’ same ol’ since the dawn of mankind. Don’t expend your precious moments on trying to fix the world and it’s evils.

Go out now and do something you can do in the moment. Buy a homeless guy a sandwich, rescue a puppy on the freeway, plant some flowers for your neighbor.

i think when the books are balanced, this incident pales in comparison to the hardship suffered by Palestinians under the de facto apartheid regime, cruelly imposed by the Israeli authorities. The ANC resorted to such tactics as did the IRA, the asymmetric relationship between the two warring parties in question, inevitably, and notoriously produces the most vicious retaliations. Furthermore i seem to recall many, many moons ago, Hebrews buckling under the humiliating yolk of Roman imperialism and in virtually the same location, anyway, the behaviour of the Romans were not so dissimilar to our Israeli contemporaries when dealing with dissent…..brutal, shocking and genocidal.

in fact it seems to me, that Israel has learnt a trick or two from it’s historical oppressors.

it’s = it is.

@zen_ You know that when you shake the tree, the virulent anti-Semites, the Hamas-apologists and the downright ignorant will fall out. Just ignore them.

kevbo's avatar

What a great metaphor… gosh where have I heard that before?

Oh right. From the evangelical christian weapons system designer.

It’s so hard to know which Kool-Aid is the right one to drink.

shilolo's avatar

Of course, you’re right. As always. Genius.
FYI, if you’re going to use a link as a “joke”, at least link it correctly. (Or, maybe, there’s a Fluther conspiracy to prevent you from doing so. That must be it….)

kevbo's avatar

Well, if you refresh about 15–30 times, occasionally it does work, so you tell me. But I suppose it matters less than simply getting the point across that I’ve heard that metaphor before from someone similarly self assured.

And while it doesn’t go unappreciated to earn your validation (however smarmy) that I’m “right” in my recollection of my personal experience and statement of perspective, I don’t see anything here that I’ve asserted as capital T truth, which is ironic given that the OP’s question is pretty much loaded with assumptions about what choices one has in responding to the topic. Obviously, there’s some meat to his question, but unfortunately it is buried by an emotionally-charged display of some semblance of a persecution complex. I mean reread the question. Basically it’s “OMG did you hear what the bad guys said on the Internet?!?!?!” Really? Wow! They’re bad guys. What else would they say? Oh, and I’m an asshole for not unconditionally agreeing with the OP? Okay. And @gorillapaws is deserving of a personal attack because he attempts to explain the OP’s position but doesn’t understand it completely? Sure. Because obviously we both might as well have pulled the trigger ourselves?

Is that how it works, @shilolo? Do enlighten these cretin minds.

Another couple was shot last night – the Hammas is simply trying to derail the Peace Talks underway in Washington as we speak. Normally, Netanyahu, as opposition leader, would be sreaming bloody murder – which it was – and call for ending the talks immediately. The main reason being – Abu Mazen doesn’t have control over his terrorists people – otherwise, why is the timing so very, very wrong – during the Peace Talks – what are they, stupid? In any event, Bibi is serious this time – as I predicted a while ago; much to everyone’s surprise and chagrin – despite the daily terrorist attacks within Israel, during the talks, the dialogue must continue – or there never will be peace in the ME. I hope both sides, Bibi as well as that (documented, doctoral thesis writing – Holocaust Denier piece of shit – zero Hammas controlling) Abu Mazen sign a treaty and move forward. If they could sit down with Arafat (it was Bibi back then, too – it’s his second time round as PM) then he can sit down with Abu whatever.

shilolo's avatar

@kevbo It takes someone very self-centered to assume I was talking about them. There are other people posting on this thread who have spent quite some time espousing their love for Hamas (and terrorists in general) as well as their hatred for Jews and Israel.

kevbo's avatar

@zen_, it is disheartening to witness acts of sabotage, especially when there’s potential for something better and times when the public is easily swayed to embrace more chaos. Perhaps change proceeds to slowly for my patience, which is why I never expect much, but it is good to hear that this episode isn’t derailing peace talks. The unfortunate side of creating peace is that one often has to endure the opposition’s final blows without retaliating, which can be quite difficult when so often there are factions of one’s own tribe calling for blood. Let’s hope the dialogue holds up.

One can only hope.
