Is there anyplace that might want my old college textbooks?

Asked by rts486 (3013points) September 3rd, 2010

My dad cleaned out his garage and brought me all the stuff I’ve left at my parents house since I was in high school. This included a couple of boxes of my old college text books. They are from a variety of courses and I’m sure they aren’t used by anybody anymore. I don’t need them and was wondering if there are any organizations that might want them. I don’t have the room to keep everything.

You could sell them on Amazon and make a few bucks. Or, you can donate them to a charity thriftstore…or, place them on Craigslist.

I was in a similar situation last year. The used book stores weren’t interested in even taking them. I considered Amazon, but since they were so old, the rules of chemistry and psychology have probably changed, and the ones from literature classes had writing and highlighting in them. I finally took them to the local library and donated them. It can go as a tax deduction if the paperwork is filled out detailing each book and its worth.

You might consider donating them to a university library. Some students who can’t afford textbooks check them out from the library. Even if they are older editions of a textbook that is still in use, they can usually be utilized.

browse Facebook for students studying the subject the book is on and pass on generously :) or you know, apply a charge it’s up to you

No. Sorry but colleges require teachers to use newer versions so that the textbook industry doesn’t die as soon as enough used copies are in circulation. Unless its only 2 or 3 years old, its time to create a textbook bonfire in your backyard.

Surely there is something in those textbooks of yours that could prove helpful to some of the students who maybe can’t afford brand new versions…

I doubt anyone is still using these books; they are over 20 years old. But I think somebody can get some use out them, especially the language and history books. The idea of throwing out or burning books is very distasteful to me.

I’ve made a ton of money selling old textbooks on Amazon. Give it a try! Please don’t start a textbook bonfire.
