My computer can't start normally?

Asked by nailpolishfanatic (6637points) September 3rd, 2010

I was showering and then when I came to my computer, it showed that I had a msg from my friend saying “hey is this a pic of you?”
and then there was a link. I copied it and tried to open the link but it didn’t work. Then suddenly my computer shut down and now I can’t start it. I now know it was a virus. I need my computer to communicate to the girls cause we are going to a party tonight and I don’t know where it is. WHAT CAN I DO?

ALSO I NEED MY COMPUTER FOR SCHOOL.

Um, how’d you post the question?

My daughter had the same message (I think it was on Facebook). Her computer (a Mac) recovered, but her facebook account was hacked.
You are going to need to start your computer in safe mode, and recover a previous date.
And, for gosh sakes, take the computer out of the shower!

Try and boot in safe mode, when the boot screen come on press F11 repeatedly.(if you are using Windows)

@frdelrosario , I am using moms.
@filmfann , I don’t quite understand. Also I wasn’t in the shower with it. After the shower :P
@kawohi what do you mean? I did press f11. but only once and there was some text.

To boot into safe mode, hold down f8 (not f11) while the computer is powering up.

> Select “boot into safe mode”.

> Your computer will boot, but you won’t have networking for the moment.

> When you reach the desktop, it will ask you if you want to revert to a previous restore point or continue in safe mode. For the moment, I recommend that you continue in safe mode and run a full virus scan of your computer using your AV software – some viruses like to hide in the recycler/restore points folders and reinfect your PC when you use the restore option, this way can help you to get rid of them.

> When the scan has finished, you can attempt to restart. Alternatively, you can use the restore option to go back to a previous restore point.

Once you can get it started, you may want to perform tasks to improve the performance as well – I try to defrag my drive fairly regularly.

it did warn me that this could be a virus! but I just don’t know what got in my mind and I just continued like a stupid mindfreak!

Ok, so when I turn on my computer, it shows
Press F2 for System Utilities
Press F11 Key To Run Boot Menu

if I don’t press any of these for some seconds then this shows up:

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 082)
Copyright© 1997–2000 Intel Corporation

For Realtek RTL8101E/8102E PCI-E Ethernet Controller v1.06 (080222)
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F:Exiting PXE ROM.

-

that’s all that happens. I don’t know what to do cause I am not a computer genius people???
any help???

Hope there is no part missing cause it costs alot to replace it.
How can I fix it by myself?
I NEED MY COMPUTER FOR SCHOOL AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Sounds to me like the virus has destroyed the boot sector.

Do you have access to the operating system disc? If you do, we can discuss non-destructive recovery options.

If all else fails, I would suggest downloading Ubuntu, burning it to a CD-ROM.

> Pop the Ubuntu disc into the CD drive.

> Hit F11 when it tells you to run the Boot Menu

> Select the optical drive to boot from

> Ubuntu will start after a few minutes – it will seem sluggish as it:s running from a CD-ROM; it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with the computer.

> It will show you your laptop hard drive on the desktop. You can browse the drive and copy any documents you need to a flash drive.

> After you’ve finished copying the documents you need, you can reinstall Windows. It will be a destructive install in that all files and documents on the drive will be wiped. You’ll have a fresh, brand new installation. You might want to install Ubuntu to the drive if you don’t have a Windows disc or you never know you decide you like Ubuntu.

What’s the make and model of the laptop?

nailpolishfanatic's avatar

it’s an LG Notebook, it doesn’t have a CD-inserter :/

It doesn’t have a CD drive?

Must be a netbook. Does it run Windows XP or Windows 7?

You can still rescue your files.

The first thing you’ll need to do is download Ubuntu. After that, you’ll need a flash drive (2GB is perfect).

> Download Linux Live USB Creator. Extract it to your desktop.
> Insert your flash drive. Make sure you back up any files you want
> Launch Linux Live USB Creator
> Start at ‘Step 1: Choose your key’ – choose the flash drive you inserted.
> Step 2 – navigate to the Ubuntu file you downloaded – it should come in .iso format.
> Step 3 – no persistence is sufficient for your needs.
> Step 4 – check “Format the key in FAT32 (this will erase your data!)
> Click “Create”

This will put your CD image into a format that allows it to run from a flash drive, so you don’t need a CD-ROM drive.

If you hit F11 when the netbook is booting, you will be able to boot into the Ubuntu image on the flash drive. If you have another flash drive or external hard drive handy, you can connect them now and copy your files over to them.

To go any further, I need to know whether the copy of Windows that came with the laptop has a physical disk or not.

Oh yeah sorry it’s a netbook. It runs Windows XP.

You was hit by a Java Drive by. Don’t ever click on something you don’t know.

Download Malware Bytes Anti-Malware .
Then turn off your internet. (If you was hit with a Trojan. You might have someone watching your every move on your computer and if they see you scanning your computer, they might stop it)
Do a fullscan. If you can find a serial and activate Malware Bytes then do a flashscan. That should solve it. Download Tune-up Utility’s and clean up your registry.

ahh I can’t doenload if the computer can’t start.
Well thank you for your help, but today there is a guy from moms school who is coming to fix it for me and he said he’s gonna delete everything and download windows xp again for me. Should I tell him to do me the scan or can I do it myself?
