Can you successfully freeze and then thaw a cake with whip cream topping?

Asked by peggylou (1141points) September 4th, 2010

If you freeze a cake with strawberry filling and whip cream frosting, what happens when it thaws out? Will the whip cream topping break down and get all watery, or can the cake be served looking and tasting as it did before freezing?

Cake can be frozen. Not sure about whipped cream. I would keep the cream and cake separately.

I don’t know for certain, but I’m inclined to agree with @lilikoi in that I would freeze them separately if you can. Something makes me think that it wouldn’t work out very well. I’m only guessing, though.

Whipped cream will indeed get very weepy when frozen and then thawed. Can you scrape and and throw away the original frosting, then freeze, then thaw and cover with freshly whipped cream?
