How bad does a withdrawl look on college transcripts?

Asked by krose1223 (3274points) September 7th, 2010

I am taking online courses for the first time this semester and I definitely feel like I have bitten off more than I can chew. I loaded myself full time and I am not doing so well in my Goverment class. I really want to drop/witdrawl from it because I don’t want to bring my GPA down. I think I could probably pass it if I had to stay it, but with a very low C. I know I could ace it if I could actually go to class, but online courses are apparently not my thing. I have honestly studied my butt off, taken notes, watched as many videos as possible, but it’s just not sticking in my head!! I feel like I will be letting myself down if I make anything less than a B.

So which would look worse, a withdrawl or a low grade?

Withdraw. You can always take it later.

A low grade usually looks worse than a withdraw. Does your school have a limit on the number of courses you an do this with? (I only ask because I think mine does.) We all have those quarters/semesters where our schedule is just too much and I don’t think it will hurt you in the long run.

I had at least two in college; they were never even brought up during grad school interviews.

I am great at online classes. You should pay me to ace it for you :P

Withdraw. Shit happens. Anyone reviewing a transcript is human and has to understand that. If they don’t you probably won’t enjoy working for them anyway.

I’m sure some companies pay attention to transcripts, but other than grad schools, it seems to me that most people don’t look at them very carefully. Even then, it’s the HR people who look, not those who actually make the hiring decision.

So I wouldn’t worry about a withdrawal. If someone does look, the low grade will stand out more than the withdrawal.

@lilikoi I don’t know… this teacher is pretty hardcore. I have put the most time into this class and it is my lowest grade. I think the killer is the fact that he is sto strict on timing his quizzes/tests. 20 questions=10 minutes. 10 questions=5minutes… so on so forth. Plus, tests and quizzes are the only thing we are being graded on. I understand it needs to be timed to prevent major cheating, but seriously?!

I’ve never understood that either! I think notes should be allowed for at least some tests and quizzes, because in the real world you are allowed to look stuff up and get a second opinion…Most of the time anyway
