If you are not a mod what would you be concerned with if you were a mod?

It’s like really great sex… but with a condom.
So, uh, no thanks.
It’s busy. Kind of fun sometimes. It has its perks.
It’s like picking all the burned kernels in the bag of popcorn you just cooked
You are so excited to dig in. Yummy, buttery popcorn. Yet there always has to be a burnt kernel or two….or three. :/
not a mod here….obviously
^ Welcome to fluther. You aren’t a mod because you’ve been here for less than 24 hours. It takes at least 2,3 days til they offer it to you – as they tend to drop like flies.
If I were a mod I would have to give up my biases, my petty annoyances, my irrational banishments, my license to look only at what interests me and say what I please about it, and a whole lot of free time. I would have to be so virtuous that I couldn’t stand myself.
Its like being in a squad.
If it were a paid job, I would take it very seriously, follow the rules. In my mind I would be happy to be helping the site maintain it’s mission and integrity, and I like the role of manager, and in a way it is managing the content.
I don’t think I would want to be a mod, just to be one, because generally I don’t like the idea of being the policeman just for the hell of it. I’m typically not one to try to control people, and as @jeruba pointed out, I would have to give up some of my freedom in responding to Q’s, because as a mod I would now be in the position of having to lead by example. I do however sometimes sort of mod when I feel someone is being especially mean, I say so on the thread.
I’ve kinda always wanted to be a mod on some site. I guess it’s the desire for arbitrary power, I don’t know. Of course, like @JLeslie said, it would be difficult to lead by example, having to double-check to make sure every post you make is appropriate.
I have great respect for anyone who has such a position and uses it justly.
I agree with @Seek_Kolinahr… I’ve always thought that it would be a mod on a site, just because I like to regulate. However, I think I would probably be afraid to contribute to the site if I were a mod, out of fear that I would not make the greatest example.
As a postscript, I learned in many years of corporate life that the position with the greatest liberty is at the bottom of the hierarchy. Throughout my career I steadfastly resisted any pressure to rise even one rung on the ladder. And I take the same view here and in the little clubs I belong to and everywhere else that it applies. If I have any influence, it’s personal and not by virtue of position, and if I don’t, that’s fine—it isn’t worth giving up any freedom for.
Busy. Stressful?
I love to blabber on about being a mod. But only if there are specific questions I’m answering.
You may see some of your thoughts answered in this question. Otherwise, think up some more specific qualities to ask about.
It’s everything you’ve ever wanted and more.
Not that I would know.
Being a mod is quite an eye-opener. I see every removed quip and damn, we got some nasty folks on here. I finally get to do something about those questions and quips which blatantly disregard guidelines, which is nice, but I also have to deal with the abuse that gets heaped on the mods now too. I don’t have to take nearly as much abuse as the founders and our community manager though. Poor Auggie takes it up the ass.
@KatawaGrey The abuse you guys have to deal with makes me glad it’s you and not me. ^_^ I’ve been there before and it’s not fun.
When I was a mod at other sites, it kept me pretty busy. People that didn’t like the rules of the site seemed to be the most troublesome. Some of them would intentionally post things just to be modded so they could then bitch about being modded. * sigh *
@Seaofclouds: Thankfully, I’ve fallen more into the “trusted mod who people take troubles to” role rather than the “mod people go out of their way to piss off” role. I still do get some of the general “you’re a mod so I hate you” attitude. Oh well, it’s a hazard of the job.
@KatawaGrey It’s good that you don’t get too much of the bad stuff. You guys should get hazardous pay. ^_^
It’s interesting, busy, rewarding, punishing, and we have a secret handshake. ;)
Oh, I’m in, just for the handshake. ^_^
