Does the IPhone 4 get better battery life in practical use than the 3G and previous models? how has your experience been with it in general?

Asked by rovdog (842points) September 9th, 2010

After about 2 years of use the limitations of my Iphone are getting to me. Poor reception with ATT service (which I switched to for the Iphone like many) and also poor battery life. Ive noticed I use my Iphone functions less and less- I’m thinking maybe I want a different phone even though I’m very much in the mac walled garden of devices. Does the Iphone 4 have better practical battery life than the Iphone 3G?( I’m assuming it’s call quality is pretty much the same considering it’s still ATT. )If not what would be the best smartphone for battery life and functionality? any advice appreciated

I switched from 3g to 4 and definitely noticed a difference. With my 3g i would barely last a full day on one charge, now I am easily going 2+ days.

reception actually seems a little worse, but it could be just that i am noticing it more now that I know there are issues.

I like my 4 but its battery life is no better than my old 3GS and sometimes not even as good. Otherwise, I’ve had none of the antenna or proximity sensor issues other people have been complaining about.

Definite difference for me. When I got home from work with my previous iPhone, it’d just have a sliver of red left. Now, when I get home (and I use it more since the internet seems quicker) I have half the battery left.

I have to charge my 3G Iphone every day. In a day with with heavy use- or even moderate heavy use- I can sometimes run out of battery by the evening- frustrating on a day trip somewhere. My old (non-smart) phone used to go a couple of days without charge. Looks like the battery life has improved somewhat- right?

@rovdog Your old (non-smart) phone didn’t connect to the internet, have a large display, play games, etc. All of these things are a major drain on battery. Connect your old phone battery to your iPhone and you will have about an our of battery life

So yes, battery life has improved drastically.

@jackm I’m aware of that- my comment about my non-smart phone wasn’t meant as a direct comparison, more anecdotal- obviously I enjoy the features of an Iphone . I do think however that it would be great for the Iphone to get to a level with battery life where in heavy usage would last one full day- enough time to recharge the phone at night. My original question was actually just to see if Apple had improved on this with the Iphone 4. According to you and mrrich- it sounds like they have.
