Which movies would you liked to have seen a change of actor in the lead role & who would you have cast instead?

Asked by ucme (50047points) September 9th, 2010

Yeah, a fair amount if not the majority of actors we see in the final film were not the first choice. Clint Eastwood has revealed he turned down two major roles in the past. Confirmation. Can’t imagine him in either role so probably just as well. So yeah, if you had been wielding the directors wand, what changes would you have made? Purely hypothetical of course, I mean you never know how the performance would have changed the movie. Nevertheless it’s fun to imagine. Lights camera action!!!

A principal role, though not the lead: the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the role of Arwen.

I’m tempted to say “almost anyone else.” In truth I don’t know the names of many lovely young actresses, but given head shots and resumes I bet I could find two dozen in less than an hour.

Valkyrie. Great movie in theory, but Tom Cruise was an awful choice. I’m not sure who I would have cast in his place, though. There are countless actors who would have been more convincing than he.

I want John Wayne to play Scarlett O’Hara.

crazyivan's avatar

The casting of Ellen Paige in Inception was a recent cringer.

@Fly Couldn’t agree with you more on Valkyrie. And could nobody in that flick even attempt a German accent?

I didn’t even like The Da Vinci Code that much as a book, but casting Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon in the movie made it even worse. Holy crap.

I agree with MacBean on Ton Hanks in the lead of the DaVinci Code. I would have cast Hugh Jackman or George Cloony.

Bram Stroker’s Dracula
Replace Keanu Reeves with anyone else

ucme's avatar

Reeves should’ve played the stake, a wooden actor extraordinaire

The Terminator.
Should have been played by Danny DeVito

Anything with Keanu Reeves in it could be vastly improved by casting someone else.

@ucme
Do not diss Keanu.
For Aeons has he lived. And he lost more than Man can remember.

erichw1504's avatar

Replace Keanu in all his lead roles with anyone else, except for The Matrix (he made that role) and The Day The Earth Stood Still (it was the perfect character for him).

@ragingloli alas including his brain twas lost. A most excellent development. Like totally rad dude

I love Seth Rogen and will watch anything he’s in, but I’m getting awfully tired of his same buddies showing up in so many films and doing the same shtick. I also think Jack Black and Will Ferrell have worn out their welcomes.

Also… I hated seeing DeNiro in “Meet the Parents” and the sequel.

Any kid actor ever in anything.

Austinlad's avatar

Ah @crazyivan , you must be too young to remember what incredibly fine actors Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Dean Stockwell and so many others were as kids.

^^patronising old fart…....hmmm, although I do agree

“I want John Wayne to play Scarlett O’Hara.”

Marion Morrison would have made a lovely Scarlett and also would have kicked Vivien’s bony little ass. :p

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

Gadzooks! I would have took Nicholas Cage out of the lead in “Con Air” and I would have used Vin Diesel. And I would have replaced him in “The Pacifier” with Will Smith.

Pied_Pfeffer's avatar

Tom Cruise in Interview with the Vampire wrecked the film version for me. Author Anne Rice’s original choice of Julian Sands would have been a much better pick.

ucme's avatar

Hmm, Wayne playing O’Hara? He would have looked like a True Tit in a dress :¬)

crazyivan's avatar

@austinlad I’m definitely too young to remember Judy Garland as a kid, yeah. I am a big fan of classic films, but I stick mostly to silent era stuff or the comedies that immediately followed (What I call “silent movies with talking in them”). For my mother’s sake, I almost put a clause in my answer exempting Shirley Temple so please apply my answer only to movies that came after 1975 or so…

Jeruba's avatar

I would recast Nicole Kidman’s part in anything, anytime.

Except—yes, I would have preferred her as Arwen.
