I have a bunch of movie buff friends and sometimes our conversations wind up being about 60% movie quotes. This led to a discussion about what was the most quotable film of all time. I won’t prejudice anyone with my opinions, but I love some more takes on it.

Frankly my darling i don’t give a damn…..maybe top 10
Gone With The Wind obviously , kinda
I have some friends who will have entire conversations from Withnail and I…
edit – maybe too quirky and British?
Fight Club, Anchorman, 40 Year Old Virgin, The Hangover… it’s mostly comedy quotes that make their way around my circle of friends, apparently.
Damn it! @iammia beat me to it. Well, I say, “Play it! If she can handle it, so can I.”
Jerry Maguire, “Show me the money!”
Also, I’d have to say Austin Powers was definitely the most quoted in it’s prime.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is definitely the most quotable movie of all time. I know some people who normally can’t remember a movie quote to save their lives, who have memorized the dialogue of the entire movie.
Ni!
@goldblum That is exactly the movie we came up with. I argued that Casablanca deserves the title since even people who haven’t seen it know at least half a dozen lines from it (“Heres lookin’ at you kid”, “Play it again Sam”, “We’ll always have Paris”, “This could be the start of a beautiful friendship”, “Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world…”, “Kiss me like it’s the last time”).
That being said, I could write a much longer list of Holy Grail quotes off the top of my head.
Forest Gump. Life is like a box of chocolates.
Jennay!!
Run Forest, run.
@jeffgoldblumsprivatefacilities My American Literature professor made one tiny Monty Python reference (he asked someone who came late to class to “answer me these questions three”) and effectively derailed the course for the next ten minutes.
My Arthurian Romance professor had to keep us in line more often. It was always too tempting to make a reference.
@crazyivan I think it is the opposite for me. I have never seen either movie, and I know a good handful of quotes from Casablanca… and the only MP quote that I can think of has something to do with hamsters. I don’t even remember the actual quote.
Holy Grail, no question.
I got better…!
Although, I know a lot of people who quote Delirious, even though it’s a comedy gig movie.
Wanna lick? Psych!
The Breakfast Club has all kinds of funny lines from it.
“Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?”
Monty Python and the Holy Grail is definitely up there. When I was doing a surgical rotation, “It’s only a flesh wound!” was quite popular.
I think The Princess Bride is also in the top 5. “Have fun storming the castle!” can be an excellent rallying cry. :-)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Casablanca
The Big Lebowski
Fight Club
Robocop
-The Princess Bride
-My Cousin Vinny
-Dumb & Dumber
Those three contain the most quotes that get thrown around within my family. They aren’t exactly AFI top 100 quality, but they are memorable, hilarious & always fun to say in the voice of the character.
@Dr_Dredd The Princess Bride is another great movie for quoting.
“I only dog paddle!”
Rocky Horror. Hands down winner.
The Wizard of Oz.
@lazydaisy That’s another good one. “Don’t dream it, be it!”
Airplane!
Pulp Fiction
Cool Hand Luke
Clerks
Star Wars 4,5,6 – I really don’t think anyone quotes the newer films
Star Trek:Wrath of Khan
Anybody else who says Borat gets a virtual slap.
@Dr_Dredd – Excellent! “I am not left handed…”, or the iconic “As you wish”
@rpmpseudonym – We never even thought of My Cousin Vinnie. How could I miss lines like “Is that a grit?” and “Clothes… I don’t get the question.” (I laugh even typing that line)
@py_sue – I was wondering when Pulp Fiction would show up. And Clerks too? Movie night. Your place.
@rpmpseudonym My favorite line from My Cousin Vinny isn’t that quoteable, but it’s still my favorite.
“Watch this.” Just before Marisa Tomei explains about the tire tracks.
Mine is actually just Marisa Tomei saying “and NASA engineers” when they’re arguing about the wrench. One of the 10 best scenes to come out of the 80s.
I’d say Day of the Dead, the original. Everyhting spoken in there is speech material.
@Symbeline That’s the one where they’re underground, right?
@Dr_Dredd “Are you mocking my with that suit?”
Holy Grail – yeah; a given. (Edit: in North America)
The only thing worse than someone who only knows and overuses Holy Grail quotes is someone who only knows and overuses Caddyshack quotes. (I posted this in another thread recently, which is good fun!)
Me? Fletch
“God I admire you.”
And I think I use “What kind of X defines me as a person?” sarcastically about once a week since Fight Club opened.
Holy Grail and Princess Bride were what I first thought of, but I guess I’ll say Life of Brian. Not as many people know the lines but there are some doozies and I quote them all the time. Also Willow. “I don’t love her, she kicked me in the face!” “You’re my sun, my moon, my starlit sky. Without you I dwell in darkness; and it went away?”
I re-read the posts to make sure it hadn’t been mentioned yet.
Ghostbusters.
“We came, we saw, we kicked its ass!”
“Ray. If someone asks if you are a god, you say, “yes!”
“Listen… do you smell something?”
Okay, I have to stop myself now. :) But, the dickless quote is my real favorite.
@Trillian “We’re all individuals!”... “I’m not.” might have been the all time best Monty Python moment. That or John Cleese correcting his latin on the city walls. I laugh just thinking about that scene.
@shpadoinkle_sue How did we get this far without Ghostbusters? Good call. “Nobody steps on a church in my town!”
@shpadoinkle_sue and @crazyivan Harold Ramus can write! Caddyshack is rife with quotables too.
You can’t golf without saying to yourself: “Cinderella story…”
@filmfann “I’d love to, but I don’t want to stick to anything…” or, my personal favorite, “So I got that going for me…”
