What is the going rate for babysitters these days?
Specifically, I’m interested in knowing what people earn or pay in more expensive, urban areas. I live in the Bay Area of California.
I haven’t babysat here in about a decade and I’m curious what people pay these days.

We pay our babysitter 10 bucks an hour. It’s a little steep, but I’d rather having her come back. I live in the Bay Area also.
I just had a conversation with the roofer about jobs and he was telling me his 12 year old daughter made $8 an hour for babysitting. As a matter of fact teens or people wanting to babysit place their cards on those post boards at the supermarket and their prices range from $6–12 an hour.
I’m from the bay area, east bay. I usually charge $10/hr for one kid, $12/hr for two, and $15/hr for 3–4. I think I would have to charge even more if I had to take care of 5 or more kids all by myself.
Okay, sounds about right. I’m babysitting tonight for ex-neighbors, this will be my second time. The first time, there were three kids and I charged $15/hr. Tonight there may be all 5 (yay, chaos!). I’m trying to figure out what I should charge, I was thinking maybe $20.
Most recently, in NY (middle to upper class areas), I’ve made $20 an hour for 2 kids (had to pick them up once a week, about 5 minutes away… in my car). For 1 kid, I’d expect at least $12/hour here just because of my experience, but also because of transportation (I live in the city and would most likely have to bus it).
I think 20 would be reasonable. I could imagine paying less than that to someone who was babysitting 5 of my kids.
I used to charge $3.50 an hour. I have very little sense of cost analysis.
Oh lord I have baby sat 5 kids at once before, CRAZYNESS. But back to the question for 5 kids I for sure got atleast 20$ and hour, I remember getting 100$ for one night
I’d say… $5 per hour per 2 kids
OMG. I can’t believe these rates. I’ve never seen a young kid so well behaved that I would even consider anything less than $20 -$30 per hour. I’m w/ @carly
Dang, I earn $20 at my job now, and I know it isn’t as stressful as watching someone else’s children, so I’m hesitant to even think that’s worth it.
And I think the responsibility of watching my children is important enough to pay alot more money than $10 an hour to some kid to be responsible for the lives of my children!
I’m sorry, just kinda shocked that people are actually paying/asking for so little.
If their kids are tyrants I would charge $10 an hour. But normally $7.00 because you can’t be bleeding people dry.
