@papayalily I’m baffled at how serious you’re taking this petty debate over dogs and cats. Get over yourself. After my initial response, I was having fun with this, reason being I think we’re both correct because no two dogs and no two cats are the same, but you’ve continued with your uptight attitude in an effort to prove how much righter you are than me. You’re failing, darling. The bottom line is, the way our dogs and cats behave is a direct reflection on how we are as pet owners. There’s nothing more to it than that. Almost everything in this thread is either an opinion or only factual depending on each pet owner. But one thing that is definitely factual, is this:
A dog doesn’t need to possess Lassie’s ability to communicate with humans on that level in order to be that helpful.
When a dog has the ability to not only guide the blind, but indicate changes in elevation, indicate and avoid oncoming traffic, navigate around obstacles, locate objects on command and retrieve dropped objects, that is pretty damn helpful.
They are even carefully conditioned to refuse the “Forward” command under certain circumstances where it would be unsafe to proceed.
There are also hearing dogs and service dogs.
Dogs that can perform helpful tasks via carrying, retrieving, tugging, depositing, bracing, harnessing and not to mention medical assistance tasks.
When wardogs have the ability to not only save lives, often sacrificing their own, but bring an abundance of comfort to the injured and infirm and be used as messengers, guards, mascots and patrol aids, that is pretty damn helpful.
When a law enforcement canine has the ability to not only search and rescue, but track criminals, sniff out illegal materials, search buildings and other tasks that human police officers can’t do as well, that is pretty damn helpful. A dog’s sense of smell is 50 times more sensitive than a human’s. They can sniff out criminals, drugs, weapons and bombs in situations where a human would have to search every inch of the area.
EDIT: There are herding dogs. I’ve never seen a cat herd sheep or cattle. Never seen a cat hunt with its master or fetch up a days worth of mallards in ice cold water. What about Rhodesians ridgebacks and their ability to kill lions so that the livestock and villages are safe from predation?
Dogs and people have been working side by side for thousands of years and there’s a reason for it. Period.
