Do you think that it would be fun if fluther had some kind of annual 'Oscar' type awards?

And if so, what type of categories should awards be awarded for?
You don’t have to think of the whole list. One or two suggestions will do.

No. We don’t need more popularity contests.
I think they do…but I can’t tell you because its a state secret
Amen to @CyanoticWasp answer. ‘Cause I probably wouldn’t get one ;~)
I like the idea.
* For each Fluther award, who has earned it the most over a 12-month period
* The “Ancient Mariner” award for the person who has stuck around the longest and is still active/participating
* To the person who received the most points for a GQ
* To the person who received the most points for a GA
I vote for no. I don’t really like those kind of things on these kind of sites. Good members of the community are very often completely left out and certain people get mentioned over and over and I don’t really see what the value is; what, if anything, is accomplished.
And the winner of the Bag Of Dicks award, for the most moderated responses, goes to…
you could hold your own and tell us how it went…give a link too
No. No. We don’t need to foster competition. It leads to bad feeling. There’s already more than enough “awarding.” We’re not trying to motivate some kind of performance here. Let’s just be what we are and do what we do without making comparisons that undermine fellow feeling and a sense of community.
What?!! Just for a bit of fun guys. Nothing heavy duty. No big contest or competition.
It could be held to coincide with the actual Oscars. The MODs would be the adjudicating panel and would apportion the awards (After having quietly and secretly decided on the nominations throughout the preceding year).
The structure could be the same, a number of nominees then one winner.
We could offer up ideas, in a thread, for what to call the award. ‘Fluscar’ comes to mind (Bit obvious, I know)
I think that it would be a good way to mark the passing of a year on the site. And something to look forward to for the coming year.
On the night, those of us who know how to, could dress up our avatars. By the time it comes around, I might even have worked out how to don a bow tie on mine!
And let’s not forget the acceptance speeches.
Come on guys, we could have a good time with this.
@Pied Pfeffer has started the ball rolling nicely and to that I will add :-

So what dya say?
There are people who are motivated by popularity or competition. If the categories are selected properly, they would not encourage those that are inspired by those personal goals.
It is about recognition. Show me someone who does not like recognition for their efforts. Granted, some of us prefer it in a private setting versus public for recognition, but it is still appreciated. Recognition inspires better performance, although on an annual basis, it has less effect. Personally, I’d love to stand up and applaud those that have earned some type of annual Fluther award.
I can imagine the mad scramble to collect the Drama Queen award. Extremely keenly contested between a not inconsiderate number of jellies :¬)
I don’t think it’s a good idea. I think we get enough recognition with the community feed and GAs people give us. I’m not here for the recognition. I’m here to help other people, get help when I need it, and have fun in the process of all of it.
No is what I say. It supplies nothing we need. It supplies something we don’t need. Most people don’t want to give awards. They want to get awards. A chorus of “What about me? me? me?” will do none of us any good. Sorry, but this is not the place for that sort of thing.
@Jeruba has clearly said no, it’s not a good idea, twice now, and explained her very good reasons. Does anyone else need any more convincing?
Well, ummm… respectfully, @lillycoyote (and @Jeruba), she’s not god. And even though I happen to agree with her in this case (and so many others), invoking her as an Appeal to Authority is a logical fallacy in discussion.
I don’t mind anyone trying to make a case for their point of view; it’s what we’re here for, after all, isn’t it?
And I agree with @CyanoticWasp: I’m no authority and don’t want to be. I’m exercising my opportunity to persuade. (Thank you for your expression of confidence, though, @lillycoyote.)
My second answer was meant as a direct response to the second statement of the question, which was worded as an appeal for reconsideration:
What?!! Just for a bit of fun guys. Nothing heavy duty. No big contest or competition . . . So what dya say?
I happen to agree with @lloydbird about a lot of things, but not this, even though I’m sure it’s well intentioned.
