[NSFW] Do Men have a weaker sense of smell?

Asked by maud_janne (37points) September 14th, 2010

I still remember a Japanese show where a couple had to prove its intimacy: the woman had to stand naked behind a carton paper showing only her “genitalia” along with 3 other girls. The man had to go through some kind of hole in order to smell her and recognize his true love. Can you do that?

I saw the question and my first thought was that’s a rather sexist question isn’t it? Got to the details, OMG. I really hope this doesn’t get moderated. And yes, I could pick out my s/o by the smell.
I needed a little pick me up this morning, this did it.

Good job mods. :)

“A US study showed women of reproductive age are far better at identifying odours than men after repeated exposure to the source of the smell. ”

Can I go through the hole? It depends on how low it is. I suck at limbo.

Can I identify my wife from her personal odour? I’m not sure she’d be very happy with me performing an experiment to find out, and she’s Japanese…

Second thought. It’s not smell that I would go by. It’s taste. My previous answer was in error. I have seen the studies that women are better at detecting the difference in odors. The question just threw me off a little.

It would be nice if people, instead of wasting time shaking hands, spent their time smelling other’s butts.

@maud_janne That’s going to require some adaptation in our dress code isn’t it?

@Adirondackwannabe: as long as we keep a smart dress anything could go with it

I’d recognise the aroma of strawberry cheescake smeared on the wife’s lady garden any day of the week. Except on the sabbath of course, when we have stuffing.

Yeah… dogs do a lot of things right. hahahaa… But, yes, Women do have an advantage with the sense of smell. It’s a hormone thing.

Yep, i think so! I started wondering about it when i realized my husband doesn’t seem to have as good a sense of smell as i do.

Assless chaps it is.

It’s already happening in porn. People behave just like cats and dogs. Makes you wonder how far we have evolved after all.

Female here with an amazing sense of smell. Been told by others that I am a “bloodhound”.

I just realized why the butt sniffing never took off. Think corporate meetings. It would be too hard to differentiate between the greeters and the brown nosers.

That women don’t find farting funny indicates that they have a keener sense of smell.

As a man there are days I don’t smell anything at all, though I notice tons of improvement when I focus a little.

Seriously, can anyone link to a clip of this show because it sounds hilarious.

Mama_Cakes2's avatar

Yeah, what’s the name of the show?

Sounds like bullshit to me.

I remember hearing a long time ago that a man can identify his wife/girlfriend’s scent out of a “crowd”. I remember hearing about a similar uh, experiment. I have no idea if this is true.. but I have heard the same thing. So maybe it isn’t too far out there. Or, at least I know the question has been posed before this.

I picked up my wife tonight, and the instant she got in the car, I asked, “Did you wash your hands with that soap again?” And she had. She said, “Boy, do you have a keen sense of smell!”

This is something of a mis-asked question, I think. I think that someone who is serious about the answer would do a bit of research. Perhaps this is really more about our experiences with our senses of smell?

I do know that mine is very keen. Smells overwhelm me and can easily give me headaches. I can’t stand the smell of most perfumes. Cigarette smoke—fugeddaboutit! Even outdoors. I often have to relocate myself in parks and outdoor eating establishments to get away from smokers.

I can generally tell most of the spices and herbs in a dish by smelling it. I am not, however, much of an oenophile. But that’s because I don’t drink much wine. If I did, I’m sure my nose would quickly catch on.

Not too long ago there was a CSI episode about a used panty market. Men picking them out on the basis of their scent and such. So although the sense of smell may not be as finely tuned in men it seems to work just fine in regard to this issue.

cazzie's avatar

@sleepdoc CSI??? Really??? awww….. come ON! hahahaha

According to this, women really do have a better sensitivity to smells, inasmuch as they report the smells earlier.

@wundayatta: I think the OP was far more interested in talking about the Japanese TV show he saw than discussing differences in odour sensitivity between the two biological sexes.
