Where is a good place to buy used auto parts?

Asked by jaytkay (25810points) September 14th, 2010

My sunroof is malfunctioning and I am trying to fix it myself. The local dealerships charge ridiculous prices for parts.

I know there are auto yards where you can scavenge parts yourself but what are the odds of finding the right sunroof motor?

Is there any kind of online warehouse or info clearinghouse you can recommend?

I expect answers about used parts in general, but if anyone has a line on a Subaru sunroof motor 65450SA000 or 65450SA001…

eBay has everything used auto you could possibly think of. It’s cheap cheap cheap! Check seller feedback and shipping costs before you buy!

Junk yards my friend. Nine times out of ten you can find the parts you want for less than half of retail, and in at least “good” condition. This is especially true of parts you don’t look at (for instance you may not want a seat from a junk yard, but new motor mounts will be just fine).

Finding a sunroof motor could be very easy or very hard, that kinda depends on the car. But that would be my first suggestion, call the junk yards. A lot of yards have an inventory of what cars and years of those cars they have in the yard.

Also try Craig’s list.

Most manufactures use the parts on multiple cars so do a little research and find out what other vehicles use the same parts as yours. The you have a wider choice of which cars to look for at the junk yard.
