What are some of your favourite smells & what memories do they evoke in you?

Asked by ucme (50047points) September 14th, 2010

May well have been asked before. If so, hopefully long enough ago to render it almost meaningless. So yeah, smells. What aromatic delights have you drooling & what makes them smell so good to you?

Apple pie makes me think of elementary school and my childhood.

The smell of dirt and greenery also reminds me of my childhood.

The smell of vanilla reminds me of… well… something else that I’m not sure if I want to remember or forget.

My favorite smells are coffee, garlic, and fresh cut grass.

The only one that actually evokes a memory would be fresh cut grass. Reminds me of those wonderful summer days as a kid, playing outside.

I’ve never had memories attached to scents. My sense of smell is incredibly weak. I guess since I can’t smell so reliably, then my brain doesn’t bother to keep track of scents when making memories?

Vanilla has got to be my favorite scent, by a wide margin. Next up is probably cinnamon.

The smell of my partner, especially his sweat – reminds me of all things amazing, sexually.

Lily of the valley is one of my favorite scents.

The smell of frying chicken reminds me of childhood Sundays.

Almost forgot… Barbecue sauce. I love me some good BBQ!

Vanilla makes me think of my mom baking Christmas goodies when I was a child.

My lover’s neck (sex and comfort) and inbetween her thighs (sex). Baked apples (comfort and home) and “new baby smell” (that I would love to be a Mama and comfort).

Another: That new car smell, reminds me of every time my parents bought a new one.

After the rain. It reminds me that weeping has its end. It reminds me of the feelings of innocence, stillness, and clarity.

I’m with Fiddle on the vanilla thing. I get a real strong memory, but I can’t tell what it really is. It’s powerful, but there is some sense of something not quite right.

Crayons remind me of childhood. Sometimes I open old books in the library, inhale their scent, and am transported back to visiting secondhand shops with my mum. My guitar and its case have this scent… I can’t describe it, a mix of woods. The smell reminds me of when my friend gave me his acoustic. The entire moment – I remember t with specific clarity. Rain scents (concrete, muddiness, droplets in my hair) make me incredibly happy. Watermelon reminds me of summers with my dad. There’s this specific fabric softener that reminds me of my grandmother’s house.

I’m fairly sensitive to smells and they trigger lots of memories.

The way it smells when it’s raining in the summer while the sun is shining and there are freshly mowed lawns all around…Mmmm reminds me everytime of that feeling of peace and lightheartedness I still enjoy when playing in it, just like when I was little…there are some things I refuse to let go.

Oh, and I love the smell of Bon fires, makes me think of smores and hot summer nights.

Fresh cut grass in the spring reminds me that winter is over!

Vanilla, cotton candy, frying garlic or onions. I don’t know what the first two remind me of, they just smell lovely. The garlic or onions always remind me of my grandmother’s house.

erichw1504's avatar

Seems like people either love it or hate it, but I like the smell of gasoline when filling up the car or lawnmower.

Mama_Cakes2's avatar

I hate the smell of garlic (although, I like the taste).

Fairylover78's avatar

@erichw1504 I LOVE that smell… I thought it was just me as most people think I’m crazy! Also, love the smell of Markers and Rubber Glue, definatley throws me back to the Elemen. days.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Count me in for gasoline, markers and rubber glue. Good stinks right there. :)

The smell of turkey roasting reminds me of Thanksgivings from my childhood. My whole family would get together and enjoy spending the day together.

The smell of lasagna reminds me of Christmas as a child. My mom always made it for Christmas dinner.

The smell of my husband’s deodorant reminds me of curling up in his arms and feeling safe and secure.

The smell of cookies and brownies fresh from the oven now reminds me of sending goodies to my husband (and makes me hungry).

The smell of the plastic pool floatation devices are made of. It brings back wonderful memories of the summers spent in my Aunt’s backyard with my sister and cousins. Almost every day we’d be in that pool until the sun was well under the horizon.

Also the smell of Sweet Honesty, the perfume. My mom wore it all the time when I was very young.

And the smell of thanksgiving (or any sweet or savory thing that makes the kitchen super warm). It always reminds me of my grandmother’s kitchen growing up.

The smell of wet earth/rain. It doesn’t really bring memories, I just love that smell like no one’s business.

The smell of the air right before it snows. Not many people get it (including my husband) when I’m like “Oh, I smell snow. It’s gonna snow soon.” I can’t describe the smell. My mom and I are the only ones I know that can ‘smell’ snow in the air before it actually does. I love that smell so much.

The smell of my Grandmothers house reminds me of how much I loved being there as a child. I love that houseand certain memories that come with it.

Slightly bizarrely, the smell of sheep’s milk… When I was very young, we lived on a farm and we used to be around the animals at lambing time. There’s a very certain smell of a mother sheep’s milk, warm and slightly sweet smelling, that takes me back to being 3 years old. This is the only genuine “memory” I have of being that age, so I hold onto it dearly.

Other smells that get to me (in a good way):

New car
Infant’s head
Roses
A puppy

The smell of a wood fire is probably one of my favorite things in the world. It reminds me of fall and winter; walking through the woods in autumn with my dogs, and the way the world looks after a snowstorm – clean, pristine, beautiful, perfect.

The smell of baby powder reminds me of my grandma and being in my grandparents’ house as a child. It’s a good memory, full of feelings of safety and warmth.

There is one particular book smell, I rarely smell it but it reminds me of the library my family used when I was a young child, never fails to evoke very fond memories. Smells can be highly evocative for me…

While inspecting hotels, we checked all of the electrical rooms. My favorite was always the elevator control room for the smell of hydraulic fluid. It would magically transport me back to chilly days from youth when Dad would come back from a bird-hunting trip. I’d sit in front of a roaring fire at his feet and watch him clean and polish his shotgun. The gun and elevator oils smell exactly the same.
