Do you think skyscrapers are nice?

Asked by Aesthetic_Mess (7894points) September 17th, 2010

If you do, is there a certain type you like? From a different time period or what materials they used?

I like the look of these. Looks so much nicer as a pair>

Not at all.

When I was a young girl and a teenager, I always saw myself as the city type. Everything about the city appealed to me over nature. As I get older, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

They look nice—from a distance. It’s cool to get to the top of one and look out. I wouldn’t want to live near one.

I like the cool skyscrapers they are building in Asia, like this and this, which later became this.

If they ever build it, I’m sure I’ll love this!

In India! And green, too!

Then SwissRe.

Why are all the coolest skyscrapers not in the US?

No. I’m much more of a nature appreciator.

I appreciate them for the architectural wonders that they are, and I wouldn’t mind living among them, but I’m not fond of the hassle of moving furniture with elevators.

Not any more. Every time I look at a tall building I think of a plane ramming into it. And I don’t just mean 9–11. Not more than four miles from here earlier this year a despondent, loonytunes guy flew his small private plane into the IRS building, killing a hapless employee whose job it was to help people behind in their taxes to work out a payment schedule.

No. They are just buildings. I really find it humorous when people are so attracted by a city’s skyline!

Cities are a part of our society and skyscrapers I think are an amazing achievement of mans ingenuity and capabilities. Most of them are yawners but there are some truly magnificent like the Flatiron Building in Manhattan.

I think they’re an okay way to pack a lot of people into a small footprint on the surface of the Earth. I have no particular ambition to live in one, but wouldn’t mind working in one. Aesthetically I find them awful… They appear as a sum of their parts (steel, stone, glass, etc…), aside from the few that have taken on a life of their own outside of their basic structure (for better or worse – e.g. the Empire State Building or the World Trade Center towers.)

@Austinlad Yeah – a friend of mine works across the street from where that happened. Awful.

Some are truly beautiful; art. Others are nothing more than a big building.

@wundayatta The coolest/newest skyscrapers aren’t in the US because we’re not developing. Most of our infrastructure and buildings are in place – a few new buildings go up from time to time. (We also don’t have the buy in to build as green as some places.)

I love skyscapers. I think it’s amazing that humans can put their minds to that and actually build something that lasts for so long, functions so well for people every day, and is beautiful. It actually inspires awe in me. I love mid century Mies Van Der Rohe.

You want to see some REAL skyscrapers? Take a look at the old film “The Fountainhead.”

Skyscrapers are not nice. They are RACISTS.

GQ. I live surrounded by nature, so my initial thought is no. But in the city, within that context, I think they can be quite beautiful, and moreover, space-saving. If people are to dwell in large cities anyway, may as well have tall, beautiful buildings to live in.
